Sylvania, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team braved the rain, the wind and the cold on Thursday to have three players end the day in the top-25 overall after 36-holes of play on day one of the 2016 MAC Men's Golf Championships hosted by the Falcons at the par 71, 6,712-yards golf course at the Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio.
The Falcons carded team scores of 303 and 300 over the first two rounds of play to place in a tie for sixth overall on the team leaderboard with a 36-hole team score of 603, +35. BGSU is tied with Akron in sixth-place.
"Overall we played pretty well considering the conditions," stated head coach Kevin Farrell. "We teed-off the first round in the rain and with it under 40 degrees. We turned in solid scores, but just didn't finish off the rounds like we needed to in order to be in the top of the team leaderboard. We have two rounds left, so we will look to make a move tomorrow to give us a chance to contend come Saturday."
Junior Brett Rinker and freshman Pablo Heredia Iglesias both concluded day one in a tie for 17th-place overall with identical 36-hole scores of 151, +9. Rinker posted rounds of 77, +6, and 74, +3, on Thursday for his 36-hole score, while Heredia Iglesias did the exact opposite with scores of 74, +3, and 77, +6, for the day.
Rinker finished the day with a total of four birdies and 19 pars, while Iglesias Heredia had a more up-and-down day with six birdies and 18 pars overall.
Also wrapping up day one of the conference championship event in the top-25 was sophomore Cameron Michalak with a 36-hole score of 153, +11. Michalak rebounded from a first round 82, +11, to shoot a BGSU low score of 71, even par, over the second round. He tallied four birdies, all on the front nine over his second set of 18 holes on the day, and 18 pars.
Junior Jose Narro finished just one shot behind Michalak with a 36-hole score of 154, +12, to place him in a tie for 28th overall midway through the 72-hole event. Narro, who had three birdies and a team-high 22 pars on the day, carded rounds of 75, +4, and 79, +8, on Thursday.
Bowling Green native Trey Walker turned in rounds of 77, +6, and 78, +7, to shoot a 36-hole score of 155, +13. The freshman registered two birdies and 21 pars to place in a tie for 30th overall after the first two rounds of play.
No. 47 Kent State sits atop of the team leaderboard with a 36-hole team score of 579, +11, with rounds of 288 and 291.
Behind the Golden Flashes are Eastern Michigan (583), Northern Illinois (593), Miami (597) and Toledo (600).
Leading the individual player leaderboard is Joo-Young Lee of Northern Illinois with his combined two-round score of 139,-3 under par. Lee's day was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par 3 hole No. 8 over the second round of play.
The third round is set for an 8:30 a.m. ET start time tomorrow morning.
The Falcons will be teeing-off beginning at 8:30 a.m. and will be playing with both Ball State and Ohio.
