Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team wrapped up its spring season on April 16, finishing with a 1-2-1 record in four 11v11 games. The Falcons scored seven total goals in the four games.
"Overall this was most productive spring we have had since I arrived at Bowling Green, having overcome a lot of different obstacles both on and off the field," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "Every session held a lot of value and we were able to stretch ourselves in ways we haven't been able to in the past. Our goal in the spring was to help our players gain confidence with their own individual skill sets, learn the strengths of the players around them, and compete against teams that have had a lot of success at various levels."
BGSU went 1-0-1 against two 2015 NCAA Tournament teams, defeating Oakland 3-1 at home on March 26 and tying Cincinnati 1-1 on the road to finish up the spring slate.
"Getting points off two NCAA Tournament teams definitely showed our young players the level they are capable of competing at. We got exposed against Louisville and defending Division II National Champions Grand Valley State which allowed us to recalibrate heading into our final week of the spring ending with a good result against Cincinnati," added Basalyga.
Individually, Erica Hubert continued her success on the pitch, as she scored a team-high four goals. Jennifer Reyes, who was a medical redshirt in 2015 due to an ACL tear last summer, as well as Victoria Cope and Morgann Williams were able to gain quality minutes in the team's spring games. Several players, including Paige Amodio, Madison Schupbach, Morgan Abbitt and Williams saw role changes that better serve their skill set to strengthen the lineup.
"I'm excited about where we are and where we are going. The players are starting to take ownership of 'their' program and have created a competitive culture that is ready for a new group of talented players to come in and make an impact next fall. The success of next season will weigh heavily on the commitment the players make to the process over the next three months away from campus," said Baslayga.
Due to weather, the Falcons played Grand Valley State on April 9 in four-30 minute periods. BGSU lost by a count of 10-4 in the 9v9 contest. A day later, the team played Stoney Creek in three-30 minute periods, winning 5-1.
