Velasquez Set To Open NCAA Regionals Thursday
May 25, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
Jacksonville, Fla. – Redshirt junior Kayla Velasquez will represent Bowling Green State University at the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary Round in the hammer throw Thursday on the first day of the meet. One of three Falcons to qualify for the meet, Velasquez will throw at 4 pm Thursday.
Both redshirt sophomore Aliyah Gustafson and junior Makenzie Wheat will compete in the shot put Saturday at 3:30 pm. Gustafson is the Mid-American Conference champion in the shot put.
Making her first NCAA regional appearance, Velasquez has work to do in order to advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Just 12 of the 48 competitors at the regional meet will advance and Velasquez is seeded No. 44. However, she did throw a personal best 186-feet-6 at the MAC Championships just two weeks ago and is peaking at the right time. Each competitor will get three throws and the top 12 distances will earn a bid to the NCAA Championships.
