Five Falcons Named to Academic All-MAC Team

Basalyga, Kory Brown, Carey, Greiner and Schildt all earn the conference honor
Five members of the Bowling Green State University baseball team have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon (June 16). Seniors Kory Brown and Tyler Greiner, redshirt junior C.J. Schildt, true junior Greg Basalyga and sophomore Zac Carey all were named to the team.
Basalyga, a native of Pickerington, Ohio (Pickerington Central H.S.), was a captain of the 2016 Falcons, and finished third on the team in hitting, with a .267 batting average. He played in 52 of BGSU's 54 games on the year, starting 48. Basalyga led the Falcons with 22 runs batted in, and was second with 47 hits and seven doubles. He also was second on the team in both total bases (60) and slugging pct. (.341), and had a .980 fielding percentage, with just four errors in 199 total chances. In MAC games, Basalyga batted .298, good for second on the team.
Basalyga reached base four times in the Falcons' game at nationally-ranked Michigan, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. He had a pair of three-hit games, including a 3-for-5 performance with two doubles and three RBI, as BGSU downed eventual NCAA Tournament participant Wright State. Basalyga also went 3-for-5 at Buffalo, scoring three runs in that BGSU win. He had two-hit games vs. MAC foes Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Ball State and Kent State in MAC play, and had back-to-back two-hit outings in a pair of wins over Ohio. Basalyga was 2-for-3 in each of those games vs. the Bobcats, with two RBI in the first win, and a double, a homer, two runs scored and three RBI in the second. His homer was a two-run shot that put the game out of reach. After that Ohio series, was named BGSU's Male Athlete of the Week after hitting .429 (6-for-14) on the week.
In the classroom, Basalyga has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.457 as a finance major.
Kory Brown, a native of Sparta, Mich. (Sparta H.S.), was a BGSU team captain for the second-straight year. A transfer from Muskegon CC, he played in 53 of the Falcons' 54 games this past spring, making 50 starts. Brown was fourth on the team with a total of 35 hits, and drew a total of 31 walks, leading the Falcons in that category by a wide margin. He scored 17 runs, ranking third on the team, and drove in 13. Brown had an on-base percentage of .329, and led the Brown and Orange with nine stolen bases.
In the field, Brown had a fielding percentage of .993, with only one error in 153 chances on the season. He went 2-for-4 in the season opener, a win at East Tennessee State, and also had a 2-for-4 performance with a pair of runs scored in a win at Elon. Brown had a three-hit day, with a double, a walk and an RBI as BG downed Savannah State. He was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and a sac bunt against Western Michigan, and had two RBI in a win over arch-rival Toledo. He also had two-hit games vs. Ball State and Ohio, scoring a pair of runs vs. the Cardinals, and went 2-for-4 in back-to-back games, with the latter game coming against nationally-ranked Florida State on the road.
In the classroom, Brown has a cumulative GPA of 3.950 as a finance major. He was named BGSU's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year at The Ziggys, BGSU's annual athletic honors night, in April. That came after he was named the school's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015.
Carey, a native of London, Ohio (London H.S.), started 14 games and pitched 72 2/3 innings for the Falcons in 2016. He was 3-10 with a 6.60 ERA on the year, and was second on the Falcons with 41 strikeouts. Carey led BG pitchers in games started and innings pitched. He picked up a win at Appalachian State, allowing just one earned run on four hits in six and two-thirds innings. Carey struck out six batters in that victory.
Carey also got the win in his next start, allowing only one run and five hits in seven and a third innings of work against Savannah State, striking out six batters in that win as well. The sophomore pitched six innings and got the win against Toledo on the first weekend of April. He threw five innings of a win over Ohio and did not surrender an earned run, but did not get the decision. He pitched well enough to win in back-to-back MAC starts, but suffered the loss vs. both Ball State and Northern Illinois. At BSU, he allowed three runs and six hits before leaving with two outs in the seventh of a 3-1 loss. Against NIU, Carey gave up just two runs and five hits, going seven and two thirds innings, but the Falcons fell by a 2-0 score.
Carey, an exercise science major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.896.
Greiner, a native of Brunswick, Ohio (Brunswick H.S.), played in 30 games, starting 20. He hit .232 on the season, with a pair of homers and 10 RBI, but was third on the Falcons with a .278 batting average in MAC games. Greiner led the Brown and Orange in both on-base percentage and slugging pct. In conference play, with an OBP of .381 and a slugging pct. of .444 against league competition.
Greiner had a fielding pct. of .976 in MAC play and .955 in all games. After playing sparingly on the team's spring trip, went a combined 2-for-3 in a pair of appearances vs. Toledo, including a three-run homer in a win over the arch-rivals. He helped the Falcons to a win over Ball State, going 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and two RBI in that victory. Greiner also homered against Kent State in the final home game of his BGSU career, going 2-for-4 at the plate in that contest.
In the classroom, Greiner has a 3.361 cumulative GPA as an AYA education major.
Schildt, a native of Hauppauge, N.Y. (Hauppauge H.S.), appeared in 11 games, starting them all, in 2016. He had a 3-6 record and was second on the Falcons with a 3.07 ERA. Schildt led BG pitchers in opponent batting average, allowing foes to hit just .247 against him. The lefty pitched a total of 55 2/3 innings on the year, and struck out 40 batters. In MAC play, he started six games and was 1-4 with a 4.50 ERA. Schildt struck out 17 batters and allowed opponents to hit just .259 against him in 28 innings in MAC action.
After missing the 2015 season due to injury, Schildt picked up his first win as a Falcon in the season opener at East Tennessee State. The transfer from Kaskaskia College threw five innings of one-run, five-hit ball in that game, striking out four He allowed just five hits in five innings in a win at Elon, but did not get the decision in that 6-2 BG victory. The next time out, however, Schildt picked up a win over Presbyterian, giving up a run and six hits before leaving with two outs in the seventh. He was the hard-luck loser against Western Michigan, despite allowing just three hits and no earned runs, as the Falcons fell by a 1-0 count. Schildt got a win in MAC play against Ohio, surrendering just one (unearned) run and three hits in five innings. He allowed only two hits over four and two thirds innings of a win at Ball State. Following an appearance against Northern Illinois on April 29, he missed the last three weeks of the season due to injury.
Schildt, a communications major at BGSU, has a cumulative GPA of 3.222.
The Academic All-MAC Team honor is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, said student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport (note: the minimums differ slightly for pitchers). First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
From the list of Academic All-MAC Team members, the conference's faculty athletic representatives will select the 'best of the best' to be honored with the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever is greater. The list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes is expected to be announced sometime in the next few weeks.
