Falcon Basketball Players in the Pros
Bowling Green, Ohio – With over 75 former members of the Bowling Green State University men's basketball program having either played or coached in the professional ranks, a total of eight former Falcons are currently playing professional basketball, while two former Falcon student-athletes are on staffs of two different teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Below are updates on each of the eight Falcons still playing professionally, as well as former Falcon Jay Larranaga who is on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics and Cameron Black who is a member of the staff for the Atlanta Hawks.
Richaun Holmes
Philadelphia 76ers (NBA – USA)
Played at BGSU: 2012-15
Drafted at pick No. 37 overall in the second round of the 2015 NBA Draft, Holmes played in a total of 51 games for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2015-16. Over his rookie season, Holmes averaged 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds per game in 13.8 minutes per contest. He shot 51.4 percent overall on the season and 68.9 percent from the free throw line on the year. He posted an assist to turnover ratio of 1.03 on the season, a solid stat for a big man, totaled 33 assists, 40 blocks and 19 steals on the year. Holmes scored in double figures 11 times on the year, including posting a career-high 18 points versus Utah on Dec. 28. The Falcon standout also poured in 17 points in home wins versus Minnesota and Portland in January.
Anthony Henderson
Mid-South Echeos (ABA – USA)
Played at BGSU: 2010-15
Anthony Henderson played for the Mid-South Echoes of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in their inaugural season in 2015-16. Henderson helped lead the team to a second-place finish in their division, falling in the Division Final results to the Mobile Bay Tornados.
A'uston Calhoun
Angers BC 49 (France)
Played at BGSU: 2009-13
Calhoun, who just resigned for his second year with the Angers ABC 49 basketball team of France this month, averaged 15.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game in 11 contests for the Angers in the NMI French League in 2015-16. Calhoun, who logged on average 29.6 minutes per game in those 11 contests, shot 51.2 percent from the field overall, 30.6 percent from behind the three-point line and 73.7 percent from the free throw line on the year.
He was elected the MVP of the fourth day of the BE Basket following his fine performance of 30 points, on 13-of-26 shooting, and 17 rebounds in 39 minutes in the win over Caen in October. In a win over Vitre on Oct. 30, Calhoun tallied 29 points and eight rebounds in 38 minutes of play.
He signed with the Angers Basketball Team in September in 2015 after spending the 2014-15 season with Massagno in the LNA First-Division where he averaged 18.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game over 17 contests.
Jordon Crawford
Westchester Knicks (NBDL – USA)
Played at BGSU: 2009-13
Selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NBA Development League Draft in Oct. 2015 by the Westchester Knicks, Crawford played in 49 games overall, making six starts. He averaged 8.4 points, 2.4 assists, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game on the year. The point guard, who averaged 19.3 minutes per game, shot 49.2 percent from the field overall, 29.7 percent from the three-point line and 87.2 percent from the free throw line on the season, which included two playoff games.
Crawford scored in double digits in 16 different games, including pouring in a season-high 26 points in a win over the Erie Bayhawks on Mar. 18 and 24 points in a win over the Canton Charge on Mar. 3. He nearly had a double-double of 14 points and eight assists versus the Raptors 905 on Mar. 24.
Prior to joining the Westchester Knicks, Crawford had a strong season for the Mapfree Life (Cyprus) team in the North League in Europe in 2014-15. He averaged 26.8 points, 6.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game and led his team to become the North League Champions where he was named the North League Playoffs Most Valuable Player. The former Falcon was named to the All-Star Team in Cyprus and went on to start the All-Star Game. With his 26.8 points per game, Crawford led the league in scoring and won the Scoring Title.
Scott Thomas
Limburg United (Belgium)
Played at BGSU: 2008-12
In his second year with the Hubo Limburg United basketball team in the Belgium Scooore League in 2015-16, Thomas was named to the Eurobasket.com All-Belgian League First Team. Thomas led the team in both scoring and rebounding with averages of 14.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Thomas, who played in 34 games on the year, also averaged 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He shot 46.2 percent from the floor overall, 42.7 percent from the three-point line and 75.0 percent from the free throw line on the year. Thomas was first on the team with 98 made field goals and 90 made free throws, and was second on the team with 70 made three-pointers.
Mike Dabney
Ostioneros De Guaymas (Mexico)
Played at BGSU: 2010-11
Still in the playoffs for the 2016 season, Mike Dabney is playing for the Ostioneros De Guaymas basketball team in the CIBACOPA Mexican League. Dabney, who has played in 32 games on the season, is averaging 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocks per game. Averaging 27.3 minutes per contest, Dabney is shooting 51.4 percent from the field overall, 37.2 percent from behind the three-point arc and 61.7 percent from the free throw line.
Having led his team to a 4-2 record overall in the quarterfinals against Agua Prieta, Dabney and his Guaymas squad are now in the semifinals versus Tijuana with the first game set for June 20.
Nate Miller
Ironi Ramat Gan (Israel)
Played at BGSU: 2006-09
Returning after tearing his Achilles in Dec. 2014, Nate Miller signed with the Ironi Ramat Gan (Ironi Kfar Hamaccabia Ramat Gan) basketball team in Nov. 2015 of the National League. In 18 games in the Israel – National League, Miller averaged 19.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per contest and also led the league with 3.7 steals per game. In just over 34 minutes per game, he shot 59.0 percent from two-point range, 30.3 percent from behind the three-point line and 68.1 percent from the charity stripe.
On the season overall, Miller played in 23 games where he averaged 18.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.7 steals per game.
Martin Samarco
Panteras de Miranda (Venezuela)
Played at BGSU: 2005-07
In 2015-16, Samarco moved to Venezuela to play for the Panteras de Miranda in the Venezuelan League. In 29 games, Samarco averaged 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game in 28.8 minutes of action per contest. He shot 43.1 percent overall from the floor, 36.4 percent from behind the three-point line and 80 percent from the free throw line on the season. The Falcon sharp-shooter drained a team-high 71 three-pointers on the year.
Jay Larranaga
Boston Celtics (Assistant Coach)
Played at BGSU: 1993-97
Jay Larranaga wrapped up his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics in 2015-16 having been on staff since 2012 under former head coach Doc Rivers and current head coach Brad Stephens. In 2015-16, the Celtics went 48-34 overall and finished in second-place in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. As the No. 5 seed, the Celtics fell to the No. 4 seeded Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
Most recently, the former Falcon served as the head coach for the Boston Celtics Summer League Team at the Utah Jazz Summer League in July 2015. Larranaga spent the previous two seasons as head coach of the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League. In two seasons with the BayHawks, Larranaga led his squad to consecutive playoff appearances while accumulating a regular season record of 60-40. He also established team records for all-time wins (60), wins in a season (32) and player call-ups (12). During Larranaga's two years in Erie, eight different players received NBA Call-Ups.
Prior to arriving in Erie, Larranaga served as an assistant coach at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and before that he was head coach of the Irish National Team for two years.
After graduating from Bowling Green in 1997, Larranaga played professionally in Italy, Spain, France and Greece for 12 years. He won three championships as a player and served as captain of the Irish National Team from 2001-2006. Larranaga has also served as an assistant for the Ukraine National Team under former NBA coach Mike Fratello since 2012.
Cameron Black II
Atlanta Hawks (Assistant in Player Development-Video Operations)
Played at BGSU: 2010-14
This past year, Black served as a Seasonal Assistant in Player Development-Video Operations for the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA. His duties included assisting in the development of the skills of the players, while also being in charge of video for the front office, which included scouting video for the general manager and scouts. He worked individually on the court with the athletes and practiced with the team.
In 2015-16, the Hawks went 48-34 overall and finished tied atop of the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference with the Miami Heat. The Hawks, who were the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference in the NBA Playoffs defeated the No. 5 seeded Boston Celtics 4-2 in the first round before falling in four games to the eventual 2016 NBA Champions in the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round.
