Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head women's golf coach Stephanie Young is thrilled to announce the complete 2016-17 BGSU women's golf schedule, which includes a total of 10 events overall, including the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge and the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational both of which will be hosted by the Falcons.
"Coach Powers and I are very excited about the 2016-17 season schedule. The fall has a great mix of new and challenging courses, along with a couple of familiar favorites. The team is looking forward to defending their title at the Redbird Invitational and seeing what they can do on new courses such as the Moors, NCR, and Silver Lake. All of these courses will present unique challenges where we can become better players and competitors," stated Coach Young.
"The roster is a very balanced attack this season with two players in each of the senior, junior and freshmen classes, while the sophomore class features three players. All have plenty of tournament experience and will work together to contribute to any and all of this competition schedule," Young said.
For the sixth straight year, the BGSU women's golf team will open up its fall slate at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. The two-day event will take place this year on Sept. 4-5 at the Weibring Golf Club. BGSU will look to defend their crown this year having taking home the team title last year by eight strokes. The first-place finish in 2015 tops a total of three top-three finishes at the Redbird Invitational, as the Falcons took second-place overall in 2012 and third-place in 2013.
BGSU will then continue its 2016 fall slate two weeks later on Sept. 19-20 at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University at The Players Club in Yorktown, Indiana. The 2016 Cardinal Classic will mark the third straight year that the Falcons have competed in the event, as BGSU earned a third-place team finish in 2014 and posted a fourth-place team showing last year in 2015.
The Falcons will then tee-off in back-to-back new tournaments in the Kzoo Classic hosted by Western Michigan at The Moors Golf Club in Portage, Michigan on Oct. 3-4 and the Dayton Fall Invitational held at the NRC Country Club in Kettering, Ohio on Oct. 17-18. The Falcons last played in the UD fall event back in 2009 when BGSU finished in a tie for second-place overall with a 36-hole team score of 645.
For the second straight year, Bowling Green will conclude its fall schedule at The Preview event. This year's tournament will be hosted by the University of Akron at the Silver Lake Country Club in Silver Lake, Ohio on Oct. 24. The one-day event not only gives the Falcons, but all 10 of the MAC schools a chance to play the same exact course that will serve as the site for the 2017 MAC Women's Golf Championship come April 2017.
"As always, the spring is full of excitement starting with our hosting of the Mid-American Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge in Florida and then on to Rio Verde to round out the month of February," continued Young. "We are going back to the Trophy Club where we saw great strides from the squad last year and then in April we will host the annual Dolores Black prior to beginning final preparations for the MAC Championships."
The 2017 spring season will once again commence with the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge hosted by the Falcons on Feb. 13-14 at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. At last year's match play event, the Falcons went 2-2-1 overall to finish in fifth-place overall out of the 12-team tournament bracket.
The Falcons will then fly west to take part in the Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University on Feb. 24-26 at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Arizona. BGSU is no stranger to the Broncos' annual spring tournament, as the Falcons have teed-off in the invitational in each of the last four years. Last year, BGSU turned in team rounds of 310, 301 and 303 to finish in a tie for 12th-place overall out of the 18-team field with a 54-hole score of 914, +50.
The trend of familiar tournaments will continue just over two weeks later, as BGSU will return to Dallas, Texas to play in the ORU/SFA Women's Spring Break Shootout co-hosted by Oral Roberts University and Stephen F. Austin State University on Mar. 13-15 at The Trophy Club. At the 2016 tournament last March, the Falcons carded a record low 54-hole team score of 901, +61, to finish in sixth-place overall and will be looking to make history once again in 2017.
On Apr. 8-9, the Falcons will host its annual Dolores Black Falcon Invitational after the home event was snowed out last year. Before the 2016 cancellation, the Falcons had hosted the event five straight years. BGSU has not finished lower than fourth-place in the team standings in each of the past three tournaments in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The two-day event will once again be held at the Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Dolores Black Falcon Invitational will conclude the regular season slate of events for the Falcons once again in 2017, as Bowling Green will then set its sights on the 2017 MAC Women's Golf Championship on Apr. 21-23. This year's conference championship tournament will be hosted by Kent State University at the Silver Lake Country Club in Silver Lake, Ohio.
