Stephanie Young completed her 13th full season as the head coach of the Bowling Green State University women’s golf team in 2018-19, having taken over the program in the spring of 2006.
She is the 10th head coach of the Falcons. In 2009, Young was honored with the BGSU Division of Student Affairs New Outstanding Professional Award and BGSU Athletic Department’s “Roll Along” Award. She currently serves on the Mid-American Conference Executive Committee, a role she has held since 2012, and is a NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy graduate in 2011.
Since joining the team midway through the 2005-06 season, Coach Young and the Falcons have made major improvements to the landscape of the team, with Young arguably becoming the greatest coach in BGSU history. During her time at BGSU, Young has guided the Falcons to a school-record 12 team tournament titles.
The record book for individual scoring average has virtually been re-written under Young – including several significant records that have been broken over the past few seasons. Current assistant coach Erin Fahey holds records for career stroke average (76.49) and single-season stroke average (75.48 in 2017-18). Additionally, Nichole Cox tied Fahey’s freshman scoring average record (77.17) at BGSU in 2017-18, which Fahey set in 2015-16.
In a three year span from 2011-14, the Falcons set a new BGSU team season scoring average record starting with a 318.57 mark in 2011-12, followed by a 311.26 stroke average in 2012-13 and a new BGSU team record of 311.22 season stroke average in 2013-14. The Falcons shattered that record in 2015-16 with a team scoring average of 307.83 overall on the year. The 2017-18 season average of 310.93 ranks second-best all-time.
Young guided the Falcons to historic success in 2018-19, as Bowling Green placed first three times. During the fall season, BGSU took home the title at the 10-team Shirley Spork Invitational. The Falcons won the event by 23 strokes, while Jessica Madry placed first on the individual leaderboard to earn the first win of her career. In the spring, BGSU claimed championships both the Spring Cup Challenge and Match Play Challenge.
Young’s players have also achieved success in the classroom, earning over 45 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Academic All-Scholar Awards while mentoring over 30 Academic All-MAC sections. The Falcons have had four MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes under Young.
The BGSU Women's Golf team has been honored with public recognition by the NCAA for scoring in the top-10 percent of Division I programs for their sport in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) a total of 10 times since Young took over in the spring of 2006 (2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19).
Prior to BGSU, Young was an assistant golf professional at Sylvania Country Club for three years. During that time, she served as an assistant coach for the St. Ursula Academy’s varsity golf team, where the team made two State Championship tournament appearances. In addition, she served as an USGA intern for the Toledo District Golf Association, worked for the Toledo Junior Golf Association, and worked under head teaching professional James P. McGurk, who has been named the #1 instructor in Ohio by Golf Magazine.
Young earned both her Bachelor’s Degree in 2002 (Business Management) and her MBA in 2003 from the University of Toledo. She was also a four-year letterwinner and captain of the UT Women’s Golf team from 1998-2002. Young helped her team win eight team titles and in 2000 she was the individual champion at the Bowling Green State Invitational.
