BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer program opened the 2016 campaign on Friday evening with a suspenseful 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois.

It wasn't until the 88th minute that sophomore Erica Hubert was able to strike to keep the Falcons from heading into overtime. Hubert received a through ball from freshman Chelsee Washington and ultimately tucked it in the back of the net on the keepers near side.

"Overall, I'm just really proud of our team and that we were able to find a way to win," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "We had a lot of opportunities, but weren't as clinical in front of the goal as I would like us to be. I ultimately felt like we were going to find a way to win, whether that would be in the 90 minutes or in the overtime and I really believed in our team tonight."

The Falcons held a strong offensive hold on the Panthers over the course of the match, as they tallied a total of 27 shots, while holding Eastern Illinois to just three. Hubert accounted for 12 shots on the night, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Cadel stopped three shots on goal between the pipes.

The win marks the third time in four seasons with the Falcons that Coach Basalyga has earned a victory on home-opening night.

The Bowling Green women's soccer program returns to Cochrane Field on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup with Valparaiso.
