BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Despite racking up eight shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes, the Bowling Green women's soccer team (2-2-0) fell to Oakland (2-2-0) with a 2-1 final in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.
Junior Skylar Fleak nabbed the Falcons lone goal of the match with just ten seconds remaining in the first half by knocking in a free kick taken by junior Rachel Winters from 40 yards out, driving the Bowling Green momentum into the second.
The Falcons registered eight attempted shots in the second half, doubling the four shots from the first half for a match total of 12. Ultimately, Bowling Green held the advantage over Oakland in total attempted shots by a 12-7 margin, as well as shots on goal by an 8-4 mark.
"Over the course of the last four games we have been creating a lot of goal scoring opportunities and I just think it's a situation where we're going to have to put them in front of the goal a lot more and build confidence," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "We need to create good goal scoring opportunities, but if we're not confident in those moments, we're going to get these types of results."
Oakland first went up in the 21st minute of the heated action with a breakaway goal. Although Fleak responded for the Falcons late in the 44th minute, the Golden Grizzlies fought back and earned its match winning goal early in the second half off a free kick in the 48th minute.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Cadel registered two saves over the course of the 90 minutes, while freshman Erica Hubert tallied four attempted shots, with a pair landing on net. Senior Melissa Needham also marked two shots on the day, with one landing on goal.
"I'm really pleased overall with the type of soccer we're playing. The goal we gave up is fixable, we got too high and our backs were too deep and we can fix that in training," Coach Basalyga said. "But we're still trying to learn how to win at this point and we have plenty of time to figure that out before we head into Mid-American Conference play."
Up next, the Bowling Green women's soccer team will welcome Detroit to Cochrane Field on Thursday, Sept. 1 for non-conference action at 7 p.m.
