Schaub, Walny Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
September 19, 2016 | General, Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's cross country runner Noah Schaub and women's cross country runner Rachel Walny.
Male Athlete of the Week
Noah Schaub, a sophomore from Uniontown, Ohio, finished the 2016 Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational in second place with a personal-record time of 25:57.5. He crossed the finish line just 3.3 seconds behind the winner in the 8,000-meter race. Schaub's previous personal best in an 8K was 26:05.9 in last year's All-Ohio Championships. At the 2015 Mel Brodt, Schaub finished in ninth place; that was his previous highest finish in a meet. Schaub opened the 2016 season on Sept. 3 with a fourth-place finish (15:43.9) at the Toledo Invitational.
Female Athlete of the Week
Rachel Walny, a redshirt sophomore from Clinton Township, Mich., competed for the first time in 2016 at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 16. Walny, the 2015 MAC Freshman of the Year, won the event for the second consecutive season by crossing the finish in 17:16.2. It is her personal-best 5,000-meter time and is an improvement of 3.9 seconds over her time at the 2015 Mel Brodt.
