BGSU's Rachel Walny Named MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference released its weekly Scholar Athlete of the Week awards on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 21), and the women's award this week went to Bowling Green State University cross country runner Rachel Walny.
Walny, a redshirt sophomore from Clinton Township, Mich., competed for the first time in 2016 at the 29th Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational on Friday, Sept. 16. She won the vent for the second consecutive year by crossing the finish in 17:16.2. That time broke her personal record for a 5,000-meter race by 3.9 seconds, and she won the event by 25.8 seconds.
In 2015, Walny was named Academic All-MAC and earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors. She competed in all six of BGSU's races and was the Falcons' top finisher in each. At the MAC Championships, she finished fifth and captured All-MAC recognition. Walny was named MAC Runner of the Week twice in 2015; this is her first Scholar Athlete of the Week award.
Walny carries a perfect 4.000 grade point average and currently majors in exercise science.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. for the Louisville Cross Country Classic.
