BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will host Marshall University on Wednesday (Sept. 7) night at 7 p.m. inside the Stroh Center. The match for BGSU will be its seventh-straight at home to open the 2016 season. The Falcons will enter Wednesday's match with a 3-2 record.
The Falcons are coming off a 2-0 weekend at the BGSU Invitational. Bowling Green swept both Fort Wayne (Sept. 2) and Northern Kentucky (Sept. 3), marking the first time that BGSU has earned two-consecutive wins via the sweep since September of 2012.
Furthermore, all three of Bowling Green's wins in 2016 have been sweeps. Since sets were played up to 25 points, which began in 2001, BGSU has never won its first three matches via the sweep.
Immediately following the BGSU Invitational, senior libero Madeline Garda was named MVP of the invitational. Senior outside hitter Jelena Sunjic was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In Friday's victory over Fort Wayne, Garda registered 17 total digs (5.57 digs/set). On Saturday, there was virtually no drop off, as she registered 15 digs (5.00 digs/set) in a victory over Northern Kentucky. The senior also notched three aces and one kill against NKU. Garda recorded two assists in each match.
Sunjic had 15 kills (5.00 kills/set) in the Fort Wayne triumph, and hit a staggering .433. On Saturday, the senior hit .217 with seven kills (2.33 kills/set). For the weekend, Sunjic picked up 22 kills (3.67 kills/set) and hit .340.
Offensively, sophomore Isabel Kovacic and senior Alyssa Maloney also had big matches in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Norse. Kovacic, who had seven kills and hit a perfect 1.000 in the final set, finished the match with 12 kills and hit .632. Maloney added 12 kills herself, and hit an efficient .588.
Freshman setter Isabelle Marciniak made her Falcon debut on Friday night, but made her first significant impact on Saturday. She came on late in the first set, and served as BGSU's primary setter the rest of the way. She racked up 25 assists in the match, and also tallied four digs.
The Thundering Herd of Marshall will enter Wednesday night's match with a 4-3 record, having went 2-1 over the weekend at the West Virginia Capital Classic. Marshall picked up wins over Morehead State and rival West Virginia, prior to losing the finale to Indiana State in five sets.
Marshall went 1-2 at the Indiana Invitational, which included a loss to Northern Kentucky, who the Falcons beat this past weekend. However, the Thundering Herd followed that up with a victory over Ohio – the defending MAC Tournament champions.
After Wednesday's match, the Falcons will hit the road for the first time all season. BGSU will compete at the EIU Panther Classic Sept. 9-10. After one home match versus Valparaiso on Sept. 13, the Falcons will play at the UIC Invitational over Sept. 16-17.
