TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team erased a 15-point deficit in the first half to take a two-point lead, but ultimately dropped an 85-73 contest to the University of Toledo on Tuesday (Jan. 17) night at Savage Arena. Toledo went on a 13-0 run to end the first half, and then maintained at least a two possession lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Falcons fall to 7-11 overall, and 1-4 in Mid-American Conference play with the loss. Bowling Green has now lost three-straight games after defeating Ball State on the road on Jan. 7. Toledo improves to 10-8 (3-2 MAC) with the victory.
"Our defense was much improved from the previous two games, but we still gave up 85 points. But with our defense being better, we were able to score 73 points instead of 52 and 53 points," said head coach Michael Huger. "The energy was much better, but we still need to do a much better job. That's it.
"What hurt us the most was Nate Navigato getting 22 points. He's a guy that is averaging eight. He hit us up for 22, and then Luke Knapke scored 12. Those two were the difference in the game for Toledo. They stepped up and played well. When you limit Steve Taylor, who is averaging 15 points, to ten – we did a good job with that.
"It's basketball. It is a game of runs, and they had better runs than we did. They were able to sustain their energy, especially towards the end of the game. We just have to continue to work, and continue to get better."
Toledo opened up the game by taking a commanding 21-6 lead. However, the Falcons countered with a 26-9 run to take a 32-30 lead. BGSU then had a wide open triple to take a five-point lead, but it rimmed around the rim and popped out. Toledo went on to conclude the first half on a 13-0 run to take a 43-32 lead into the break.
Toledo shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor, while Bowling Green shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73). The Rockets shot well above their average on three-point attempts, as they went 9-for-20 (45.0 percent). BGSU shot just 15.8 percent (3-of-19). Bowling Green shot just 12 free throws (8-of-12), while Toledo attempted 31 free throws (18-of-31).
Toledo native Demajeo Wiggins outplayed UT's Steve Taylor, who entered the game averaging over 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. Wiggins went 7-for-9 from the field, and notched the fourth double-double of his career, as he scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Seniors Zack Denny and Wes Alcegaire registered seven rebounds each, and were the two other Falcons to score in double figures. Alcegaire scored 14 points, while Denny scored 12. Fellow senior Ismail Ali finished with nine points, eight assists, five rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Freshman Dylan Frye also scored nine points, and did so on 4-of-8 shooting. Sophomore Antwon Lillard recorded six points on 3-of-7 shooting. Redshirt-sophomore Rasheed Worrell had four points and five rebounds. Freshman Rodrick Caldwell finished with two points.
With 9:10 left in the game, the Rockets went up 22 points, 66-44. Incredibly, Bowling Green cut the deficit to 10 points at 66-56 with 5:47 to go. Bowling Green cut the UT lead inside of 10 points a couple of times, but some turnovers hurt BG, and Toledo made just enough free throws to close out the win.
Bowling Green will conclude the week by hosting Ball State at the Stroh Center on Jan. 21. The game, which will be the second half of a doubleheader, is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Freddie and Freida Falcon will be revealed at halftime, and a recognition will take place in celebration of the fifth year of the Stroh Center, as well.
