January 09, 2017 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are men's basketball player Demajeo Wiggins and women's basketball player Ashley Tunstall.
Male Athlete of the Week
Demajeo Wiggins, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio, opened MAC play with two big-time performances. In games at Akron (Jan. 3) and at Ball State (Jan. 7), Wiggins averaged 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the floor and 85.7 percent (6-of-7) from the free throw line. In the MAC opener against the Zips, the Toledo native went 10-for-17 from the field and scored a career-high 21 points. Wiggins then went 6-for-11 from the floor at Ball State to finish with 17 points. In both games, he had eight rebounds. Wiggins' 10 field goals at Akron was also a career high, and at Ball State, he had 15 points and seven rebounds in the second half.
Female Athlete of the Week
Ashley Tunstall, a senior from Dayton, Ohio continued her stellar play as of late, as she nearly averaged a double-double in the Falcons' two games last week. Tunstall had the finest game of her BGSU career on Wednesday night vs. Northern Illinois, setting career-high totals in nearly every category, including points (17), rebounds (12) and assists (four). The double-double was her first as a Falcon, and she also set career bests in both field goals and free throws made. Then, on Saturday, Tunstall had 12 points and six rebounds in the Falcons' win at Akron. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range, shattering her career record in that category. Her final three came with 2:20 left in the game and gave the Falcons a seven-point lead, helping BG keep the Zips at bay.
