KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team has been named a recipient of the United Soccer Coaches (USC) College Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 academic year. The award honors programs that carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
During the 2016-17 year, the Falcons carried a GPA of 3.55 and ranked fifth among Mid-American Conference teams. BGSU was one of 546 women's teams and 841 total squads nationally to receive the honor. In addition, Bowling Green was one of 210 schools to have both teams recognized. The Bowling Green men's soccer program held a 3.13 GPA last year.
Head coach Matt Fannon said, "This award is something we are all very proud of. Our student-athletes work incredibly hard on and off the field, and they are very conscientious about their class work. We have very high expectations for our players academically, and they rise to the challenge consistently."
This is the sixth time since 2009 that the women's soccer team has earned the USC (formerly NSCAA) award. They were also honored in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. This year's squad is on pace to repeat this feat: entering this season, 16 of the 18 returning student-athletes held cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher, and six of them held a perfect 4.0.

Fannon's Falcons currently own an 8-5-0 overall record and a 3-3-0 mark in MAC play. With five games remaining in the regular season, the team has already matched its 2016 overall and MAC win totals, and they are currently in position to earn a berth to the 2017 MAC Tournament. Bowling Green hosts its final home matches of the regular season this weekend, when they host Buffalo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 13) and Akron at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 15).
