BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team earned their second comeback victory of the season with a resounding 3-1 triumph over Central Michigan University on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 8) at Cochrane Stadium. Marissa Swindell scored twice for the Falcons (8-5-0; 3-3-0 MAC), while Erica Hubert sealed the win with a goal in the 85th minute. Kathleen Duwve and Victoria Cope shared goaltending duties for BGSU and held the powerful Chippewa offense to just one score in five shots on goal.
The first half of the match was very even and up-tempo, as the two teams fought back and forth for scoring opportunities. Both had multiple looks inside the box, but solid defense and two saves each by CMU's Zoie Reed and Duwve, the BGSU starter, kept the sheet clean through halftime. The opening 45 minutes was also very physical; a total of 13 fouls were called, including nine on BGSU, who averaged just eight fouls per match through 12 games.
The physical play and sound defending continued early in the second half until CMU broke the ice in the 59th minute. Savannah Beetcher fed Lexi Pelafas with a long entry pass into CMU's attacking third. Cope, who took over in goal for Duwve after halftime, was caught coming forward, and Pelafas laced a shot into the net for her MAC-leading 12th goal of 2017.
BGSU wasted no time in giving an answer. In the 60th minute, Rachel Winters secured the ball and passed to Erica Hubert, who was crossing at the top of the box. Hubert split two defenders and passed to Swindell on the right, who buried a shot past Reed for a goal. Less than five minutes later, Alexis Fricke served the ball back into the box, where Jennifer Reyes ficked a loose ball to Swindell. Swindell's shot again was true at the 64:02 mark for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Hubert's goal with 5:53 remaining capped the win.
