United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Teams
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Bowling Green State University women's soccer senior forward Skylar Fleak has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region team, as announced on Wednesday (Nov. 29). Fleak earned a spot on the All-Midwest Region third team and is one of five Mid-American Conference athletes to be honored.
Fleak completed her career at Bowling Green with one of the finest offensive seasons in school history. She tallied 11 goals and five assists for a total of 27 points, third-most in a single season in school history. Her 27 points and 1.35 points per game ranked second in the MAC, while she was third in the league with 11 goals and 0.55 goals per game. Four of her goals were game-winners, and Fleak led the MAC in that category. Her efforts resulted in three MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards, which set a BGSU record. At the end of the season, Fleak was recognized with first-team All-MAC honors and was named the 2017 MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Fleak collected multiple goals three times and became just the second Falcon to record multiple hat tricks in both a season and a career. She began the season with four goals during a 5-1 victory at Oakland. It was just the third four-goal effort in BGSU history and first in 13 years. Fleak helped the Falcons to their first MAC victory with two goals and an assist during a 4-1 triumph over Miami. However, her most impressive and important offensive feat arguably occurred during the Falcons' Homecoming weekend home match against Buffalo. Bowling Green fell behind 2-0 but stormed back for a 3-2 victory behind Fleak's hat trick. She scored her three goals in a 20:16 span during the second half; that represented the fourth-fastest hat trick in BGSU history and the Falcons' first two-goal comeback victory in 14 years.
BGSU women's soccer head coach Matt Fannon said, "We are very happy for Skylar to attain yet another award in recognition of her superb season. She will be the first to share it with her teammates, who all worked to play Skylar to her strengths and help her to achieve these plaudits."
Fleak's final season ended with career bests in assists (4), shots (65), shots on goal (36), shot percentage (.169), and shots on goal percentage (.554). She vaulted to third on BGSU's all-time list in goals (27) and game-winning goals (8), as well as fourth in points (64). In addition, she set a new school record for shot attempts in a career (204).
Bowling Green finished the 2017 season with a 13-7-1 record and a 6-4-1 mark against MAC teams. The Falcons earned a spot in the MAC Tournament for the first time in nine years and won two tournament games, advancing all the way to the championship match.Â
