NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer program continues to receive recognition for an outstanding 2017 season. Four players have been named to the 2017 Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) NCAA Division I All-Ohio Team. Senior forward Skylar Fleak was named first team All-Ohio, while junior defender Alexis Fricke, junior forward Erica Hubert, and senior midfielder Madison Schupbach earned spots on the second team. The OCSA made the announcement on Monday afternoon (Dec. 18). BGSU ties Kent State for the most All-Ohio players from the MAC. Miami and Ohio each had one second-teamer, while Akron and Toledo did not receive a selection.
Head coach Matt Fannon said, "This is yet another wonderful achievement by our program, and one that all four of our women on the list thoroughly deserve. Ohio has a number of excellent division I universities, and we are proud to be recognized by OCSA."
Fleak is an All-Ohio team member for the second time; she also earned a second team All-Ohio spot in 2014. She was named the 2017 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Offensive Player of the Year after a regular season in which she posted 11 goals and five assists. She tied for second in the MAC with 27 points, just one off the league lead, and placed third in goals. Fleak began the regular season with one of the most dominating offensive performances in BGSU history, as she scored four goals on just five shots in a 5-1 win at Oakland. She tallied another multi-goal game with two during a 4-1 win over Miami, then scored another hat trick against Buffalo. Fleak put together that hat trick in a 20:16 span of the second half and helped the Falcons overcome a 2-0 deficit. She is the sixth Falcon to earn first team All-Ohio honors and first since 2014.
Hubert was named second team All-Ohio for the second consecutive year. She led the Falcons and ranked second in the MAC with 12 goals, a mark she achieved by putting on an astounding offensive display during the last month of the season. During BGSU's final 11 games, she scored nine of her 12 goals, added all three of her assists, and earned at least one point in nine of those 11 contests. Hubert tallied six of the Falcons' final eight goals of the season during the team's last two regular season and three MAC Tournament matches. Her active five-match streak with a goal has tied the school record, and her 12 total goals is tied for second-most in BGSU history and most for any Falcon in 13 years. Hubert was a first team All-MAC selection and a member of the All-Tournament team.
Schupbach was another stellar member of the MAC's best offense. She ranked second in the league with eight assists and helped lead the team to a top-ten ranking nationally with 49 assists. That number ranks second in BGSU history. Schupbach added four goals to finish the season with 16 points, which ranked third on the team. Schupbach began the season with a pair of assists in the 5-1 win at Oakland, then scored her first goal in a 3-1 victory at Detroit Mercy. However, the crux of her offense came during the season's stretch run. During October victories against Northern Illinois (2-1) and Akron (2-0), Schupbach participated in each score with a goal and an assist in both games. She also had a two-assist effort in BGSU's 3-2 comeback win over Buffalo, scored BGSU's lone goal in a 1-1 draw at Ohio, and assisted on the equalizer in the Falcons' 3-1 MAC Tournament win against Buffalo. Like Fleak and Hubert, Schupbach earned first team All-MAC recognition.
Fricke led a suffocating BGSU defensive unit that not only allowed few goals but often permitted opponents very few opportunities to score. BGSU's defense allowed only 217 total shots, just 10.33 per game, and obliterated the previous school record of 260. Opponents managed only 99 shots on goal, also a school record, and the Falcons' 26 goals allowed and 1.24 goals-per-game allowed are both second-best in school history. In a 2-0 shutout of Akron on Homecoming weekend, the Fricke-led defense tied a school record with not giving up a single shot on goal. In the Falcons' second game of the season, they earned another 2-0 shutout while allowing Morehead State just one shot on goal. Fricke also contributed on the offensive end with a goal and two assists. She scored the first goal of her career in the season-opening 5-1 win at Oakland, then assisted on a goal in regular season wins against Central Michigan (3-1) and at Kent State (3-1). Fricke was named second team All-MAC following the season.
BGSUÂ completed the 2017 season with a 13-7-1 record and advanced to the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2008. Once there, the Falcons won twice and earned a spot in the championship game. The team's 13 victories are second-most in school history.
