BGSU puts the finishing touches on a 4-0 weekend in Cleveland
The Bowling Green State University softball team concluded an undefeated weekend in Cleveland with a pair of shutout wins on Sunday (Feb. 12). The Falcons posted an 8-0, five-inning win over Canisius College before downing Robert Morris University, 1-0. Both games were held at the Krenzler Dome.
With the wins, the Falcons improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season. BGSU's start is the program's best in over a decade, since the 2006 team began the season with six consecutive wins.

Redshirt junior Chelsea Raker and the Falcons seized control of the Canisius game early, with six runs in the first two innings. Raker homered in the first inning, doubled in the second, and had five runs batted in after those two at-bats.
After Raker walked to lead off the home half of the fifth inning, senior Haley Schrock clubbed a two-run homer to left to give BGSU an eight-run lead and end the contest.
Runs were much harder to come by in the nightcap, but BG was able to string together three-straight singles in the third inning. The third, by redshirt junior Aspen Searle, plated sophomore Alex Sorgi with what proved to be the winning run.
Sophomore Kiley Sosby threw her second complete-game two-hitter in as many days in the Canisius game, moving to 2-0 on the year. Fellow soph Meredith Miller, a transfer from Southern Miss, drew the start in the Robert Morris game and fired a complete-game shutout in her Falcon debut, scattering five hits.
The Falcons had a total of one shutout during all of the 2016 season, but as mentioned, BGSU posted two on Sunday.
Through four games, BGSU has outscored the opponents, 24-2. The Falcons had at least eight hits at the plate in each of the four games, while BG pitching allowed only 11 total hits on the weekend, with three complete-game two-hitters among the four wins.
"I was proud to see the defense and offense remain consistent in their approach on day two," said BGSU head coach Sarah Willis. "Both Kiley Sosby and Meredith Miller had strong performances in the circle. Each of them came up with timely strikeouts in various situations that helped to keep the momentum on our side.
"Offensively, everyone in our lineup from top to bottom played a role today and executed. This was a great start to our season, and we will look to build on this success and maintain this consistency."
Raker was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and five RBI against Canisius, while Schrock went 2-for-3 with a run and a pair of RBI. Sorgi reached base in all three plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs.
The only two hits for the Golden Griffins both came off the bat of Lauren Castro, who doubled twice but was stranded at second each time.
Sosby, despite pitching only five innings due to her team's offensive outburst, still managed to strike out nine batters, tying her career high for the second-straight day. She had two strikeouts in both the first and second innings, and in the fourth, with runners at first and second and one out, threw a called third strike past back-to-back batters.
For the Falcons, Sorgi led off the bottom of the first with a walk, and took second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Katee Hinkle. One out later, Raker crushed an Erika Mackie offering to left-centerfield, giving the Brown and Orange an early 2-0 lead.
The second inning saw junior Laine Simmons lead off with a single to center, and freshman Taylor Blevins, inserted as a pinch runner, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Hannah Giammarino singled to move Blevins to third, and Giammarino stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Blevins would score on a grounder by fellow freshman Kendyl Wheeler, and after Sorgi drew her second walk in as many innings, Hinkle singled to load the bases. The Golden Griffins got the second out of the inning on a force play at home, but Raker drilled a double to left to plate all three runners and make it a 6-0 game.
The Falcons capped the scoring and ended the game in the fifth. After Sosby pitched a one-two-three half-inning in the top of the frame, Raker led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, and Schrock followed with a two-run, walk-off homer to left.
The final game of the tournament saw Miller and RMU's Madison Riggle put zeroes on the scoreboard, with just one exception: the BGSU half of the third.
In her first half-inning as a Falcon, Miller got a strikeout and two infield popups. The BG soph would proceed to retire the first eight batters she faced, before allowing back-to-back singles. But, she responded by getting Stacey Capp to hit a popup to Schrock at third base for the third out.
Meanwhile, the Falcons had a pair of early baserunners on a Hinkle single in the first and a base hit by freshman Logan Everett in the second. But, Riggle bounced back to retire the side and keep the game scoreless each time.
In the third, however, Sorgi singled with one out, and Hinkle's second hit in as many at-bats put runners at the corners. Hinkle proceeded to steal second before Searle singled down the left-field line to plate Sorgi with what proved to be the game-winning run. Hinkle advanced to third and Searle took second on the throw, but Riggle avoided further damage by getting a grounder back to the circle, followed by an inning-ending ground ball to third.
The Colonials' best scoring chance came in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Abrielle McCartney singled and took second on a groundout. Jordan Gurganus reached on an error -- BG's only error of the entire weekend -- to put runners at the corners, and when Gurganus stole second, RMU had two runners in scoring position. But, Miller got Capp to hit a popup to Searle at shortstop.
Wheeler led off the bottom of the fifth with a single for the Falcons, and Olivia Lorusso began the sixth with a double for the Colonials. But, in each case, the opposing pitcher proceeded to get three-straight outs with the runner forced to hold. The RMU sixth saw Miller whiff Briana Bunner, induce Natalie Higgins to line out to center, and throw a third strike past Taylor Bartlow.
The Falcons looked to add to the lead in the sixth inning. With one out, Schrock singled up the middle, and one out later, Everett singled to send Schrock to third. Giammarino drew a walk to load the bases, but Riggle got an inning-ending grounder to the right side, and the teams went to the seventh inning still embroiled in a one-run game.
Miller, in her Falcon debut, was up to the task of holding that one-run lead. She struck out Laura Coulter to begin the inning, before getting McCartney to hit a liner to Sorgi in left. Then, she struck out pinch-hitter Taryn Miller to give the Falcons the win and a 4-0 weekend.
BGSU, as mentioned, outscored opponents by a 24-2 count in the four games in the CSU Dome Tournament. The Falcons outhit the foes, 35-11, and BG had a team batting average of .337 on the weekend.
BG batters were retired in order (three up, three down) just four times -- once in each game -- during the entire weekend.
Falcon opponents hit just .125, and the BG pitching staff had an earned-run average of 0.54 in the four games. All three Falcon pitchers to see action had an earned-run average of 1.00 or lower.
BGSU returns to the road next weekend, heading to Charlotte, N.C., for five games in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic. BGSU will be joined by Canisius, St. Bonaventure and host Charlotte, in that tournament.
