ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team lost to Ohio University, 95-75, Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon at OU's Convocation Center. Senior Zack Denny reached 1,000 career points in the contest, becoming the 44th player in program history to reach the milestone. Denny entered the game six points shy of 1,000, and finished the game with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
"The main thing was that our defense broke down. We were doing a really great job on the defensive end, and that's what had us in the game at the start," said head coach Michael Huger. "Guys got comfortable and relaxed, they started to hit shots, and that was the difference in the game."
The Falcons, which have now lost three-straight games after winning three-consecutive games, fall to 11-16 overall and 5-9 in Mid-American Conference play with the loss. Ohio improves to 17-8 (9-5 MAC) with the win.
Ohio shot 73.3 percent (22-of-30) in the second half, and 62.7 percent (37-of-59) for the game. Bowling Green was within six points at half at 41-35, but the Bobcats scored 54 points in the second half to run away with the victory. The 54 points were the most that the Falcons have allowed in a single half this season.
Redshirt-junior Jaaron Simmons led Ohio with 26 points and 11 assists. He went 10-for-12 from the field, and 3-for-4 from downtown. Freshman forward Jason Carter went 9-for-11 from the floor to finish with 19 points and five rebounds. Three other players for the Bobcats finished in double figures.
Freshman Rodrick Caldwell scored a team-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. He's now scored 10-plus points in two-straight games for the third time in his career. Caldwell, who also had a team-high three assists, went 2-for-2 from downtown, marking the fourth-consecutive game that he's nailed multiple three-pointers.
Sophomore forward Demajeo Wiggins added 11 points and six rebounds. He converted on 5-of-11 field goal attempts in the ballgame. Senior forward Wes Alcegaire also scored in double figures, as he finished with 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and one assist.
Freshman Dylan Frye posted nine points, and three rebounds. Sophomore Antwon Lillard also registered nine points, while pulling down three rebounds. Redshirt-sophomore Rasheed Worrell notched eight points.
Bowling Green shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the field, and after making 6-of-12 attempts from deep in the first half, BGSU finished the game 7-of-21 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. The Falcons shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the charity stripe.
The Orange and Brown host Akron at the Stroh Center on Feb. 21 at 9 p.m. Bowling Green will then conclude the week with a trip to Oxford to battle the Miami RedHawks on Feb. 25.
