Jovannah East Named MAC Specialist of the Week
February 07, 2017 | Gymnastics
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Bowling Green State University freshman Jovannah East has been named this week's Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week. The award was announced on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 7) and is a result of voting by the league's seven head coaches.
East turned in several outstanding performances during BGSU's two weekend dual meets at Northern Illinois (Feb. 3) and at home against Western Michigan (Feb. 5).
Against the Huskies, she leapt to a first place finish on vault and tied her previous personal best with a 9.850. She added another 9.850 on the balance beam to tie for first place and set a new personal best on that apparatus.
East competed in the first home meet of her young career on Sunday against the Broncos, and her first appearance was one to remember. She established a new personal best with a 9.875 on the vault and finished second. East completed her weekend by tying for fourth place after posting a 9.800 on the beam.
During the weekend meets, East averaged a 9.844 for her four events and secured her third and fourth event victories of the season. She now has four individual wins this season and has posted a 9.800 or better in eight of her ten career routines. She leads the MAC in vault average (9.830) and is second in the MAC on beam (9.760). Her efforts have helped the Falcons lead the MAC in team average for both events.
"I am so pleased that Jovannah has been recognized by the MAC coaches for the incredible work she accomplished last weekend," said BGSU head coach Kerrie Turner. "She has been a steady competitor with difficult skills since her very first meet, and it is impressive that she accomplished excellent scores and personal bests at both competitions. This award is well-deserved."
Bowling Green returns to action at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the team hosts the University of New Hampshire in a dual meet at Anderson Arena.
