Sophomore fires a complete-game one-hitter on Sunday morning
Sophomore Brooke Parker fired a complete-game one-hitter as the Bowling Green State University softball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay by a 4-1 score Sunday morning (March 5). The game was the Falcons' final contest in Louisville's Red & Black Tournament, held at Ulmer Stadium.
The win was the first this season for Parker. The left-hander from Batavia, Ohio, was one out away from a no-hitter before Green Bay's Allie Taylor homered with two outs in the seventh. Parker responded by getting Jaclyn Delagrange to hit a grounder to second on the very next pitch to close out the victory.

The Falcons put four runs on the board in the third inning. Four of BG's five hits in the game came in that inning, including an RBI single by redshirt junior Aspen Searle and a run-scoring double by senior Haley Schrock.
The story on this day, however, was Parker. She needed just 60 pitches to get the 21 required outs, throwing 43 of those 60 pitches for strikes. Parker faced just two batters over the minimum. Prior to Taylor's homer, the only other Green Bay baserunner came on a one-out walk to Bailey Schultz in the third inning. Parker responded to that base on balls by striking out Olivia Magaldi, then getting Hailee Frey to hit a grounder back toward the circle.
Parker struck out four batters in the win, retiring the first seven hitters she faced prior to the walk to Schultz, then setting down 13-straight batters prior to the Taylor hit. Thirteen of Green Bay's 21 outs were infield grounders.
"Brooke threw a great game today making quick innings and feeding her defense easy outs," said BGSU head coach Sarah Willis. "She worked efficiently and did a good job keeping hitters off balance.
"The lineup made some good adjustments at the plate after the first time through. It was good to see the offense putting consistent pressure on the defense."
Parker primarily pitched in relief as a freshman, making just two starts among her 21 appearances in 2016. This year, she made four relief appearances before getting her first start of the season last weekend. Beginning with that game, Parker has put together four consecutive complete-game efforts, including three in as many days in Louisville.
Five different Falcons recorded one hit apiece on Sunday, with Schrock's double the only extra-base hit for the Brown and Orange. Sophomore Alex Sorgi reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a walk, and also getting on base via a Phoenix error.
Sorgi led off the game by taking first base on that error, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sami Parave, who was making her first start of the season. But, Sorgi was stranded at second after a pair of fly balls produced the second and third outs.
Junior Kayla Gregory reached base on a one-out error in the second, but again, Green Bay starting pitcher Katie Rossmann got the next two hitters to lift fly balls to the outfield to retire the side. In the third inning, however, BG would get on the board and chase Rossmann from the game.
With one out, Sorgi and Parave each singled to left, and Searle followed with a base hit of her own that scored Sorgi. Searle wound up at second and Parave third on the play, after another Green Bay error. Then, another Phoenix miscue allowed redshirt junior Chelsea Raker to reach base, with Parave and Searle each crossing the plate to give the Falcons a three-run lead. Schrock's two-base hit scored pinch-runner Makayla Wood and prompted Green Bay to bring Sinead Korvela into the circle. She got the final two outs of the inning, but the damage had been done.
Sorgi reached on a walk in the fourth, and BGSU loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth, but Korvela somehow got out of the jam unscathed. Searle began that fifth frame with a walk, and after a Raker single, Schrock drew a base on balls. But, a fly ball to left was not deep enough to score Searle from third, and Korvela then got a foul pop to first base and a fielder's choice grounder that resulted in an out at third base.
Korvela allowed only another walk to Schrock over the final two innings, as she threw four-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit shutout relief. The Green Bay freshman did walk four batters while striking out two.
Rossmann took the loss for the Phoenix, allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits before leaving with one out in the third. She did not walk or fan a single batter.
The Falcons return to Northwest Ohio for a few days, then will take to the road once again. BG will play a Wednesday (March 8) doubleheader at Western Kentucky, followed by four games in the Ole Miss Tournament from Thursday through Saturday (March 9-11).
