June 01, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Athletics invites fans and the community to join redshirt sophomore Rachel Walny at the Sebo Athletic Center at Doyt Perry Stadium for a sendoff celebration Tuesday morning. The sendoff will take place at 8:00 am as Walny leaves for Oregon for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
The Mid-American Conference runner up in the 10,000, Walny advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships by placing 11th at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. Seeded No. 18, Walny needed to climb into the top 12 to earn a spot to the national championships and she broke her own school record to make that vault into the top 12, running the event in 33:55.49.
Along with her success in competition, Walny excels in the classroom. She was recently named Academic All-MAC and boasts a 3.990 cumulative grade point average in exercise science.
This will be the fifth consecutive year in which a BGSU student-athlete has advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Brooke Pleger became the department's first three-time All-American, finishing seventh in the country in the hammer throw in 2013 then third in both 2014 and 2015. Aliyah Gustafson advanced a year ago, placing 24th in the shot put.
Walny will compete in the 10,000 Thursday at 10:08 pm ET at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
