Basalyga, Rospert, Carey, McGuinness Named To Academic All-MAC Team
June 14, 2017 | Baseball
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Four members of the Bowling Green State University baseball team have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, announced the conference office. Seniors Greg Basalyga and Addison Rospert, junior Zac Carey and sophomore Joe McGuinness were all named to the team.
Bowling Green's four selections is tied for second-most in program history (not counting Honorable Mention selections, which no longer exist). Four Falcons were also placed on the top Academic All-MAC team in 1971 and 1995. Last season, BGSU placed a program-best five players on the top Academic All-MAC Team.
"Our program is extremely proud of Greg, Addison, Zac and Joe," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "They are four of the hardest workers on the field, and they clearly have made the classroom a top priority, as well. Being a Division I baseball player and balancing all of those commitments, on top of committing yourself to your academics – it's not an easy task. The college baseball schedule can make things difficult, with teams having multiple games during the school week throughout the year. These four young men are the true meaning of student-athletes."
Basalyga graduated from BGSU with a 3.469 GPA as a finance major. Basalyga earned a spot on the team for the third time in his career, which is the maximum amount of times a player can earn the honor, given that all freshmen and first-year players are no longer eligible. The designated hitter / outfielder is only the second player in program history to earn a spot on the top Academic All-MAC Team at least three times. Gary Haas (1971-74) earned four selections when freshmen were eligible.
The senior hit .279 this season for the Falcons, and led the club with a career-high eight home runs. He smacked 13 doubles, and also led the team with a .503 slugging percentage. He played in 48 games, making 44 starts, and registered 46 hits, 30 RBI, and 25 runs.
Fellow senior Addison Rospert graduated from Bowling Green with a communications degree, and finished his academic career with 3.233 GPA. One of the most unselfish teammates imaginable, Rospert converted himself into a right-handed pitcher this season, and appeared in 11 games. The highlight of his career took place when he logged a career-high 3.1 innings at Ohio State on May 9. He also racked up a career-best four strikeouts. In the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie game, after giving up a leadoff triple, Rospert stranded the game-winning run at third, and went on to pitch into the 12th inning. Rospert continued to improve as a student over his time at BGSU, culminating with his first Academic All-MAC selection.
One of the best students in the conference, Carey is now 2-for-2 in earning a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team. An exercise science major, Carey owns a 3.932 GPA. He is one of just eight MAC baseball players on the 76-man team to have a GPA higher than 3.9. Carey led the team with four wins and 79.0 innings pitched. The junior made 14 starts, and only walked 16 batters. On April 3, he tossed a complete game in a series-clinching win at Northern Illinois. He allowed just one unearned run, and struck out six. He was named the MAC East Pitcher of the Week for his efforts against the Huskies.
McGuinness, a 3.719 education major, earned the honor in his first year of eligibility. McGuinness worked himself onto the field on a regular basis, and for a majority of the season, served as the Falcons' designated hitter against right-handed starters. He played in 32 games, and started 15 games. In 72 at-bats, he registered 16 hits, five doubles and eight RBI. He drew nine walks, and also scored seven runs. He posted a pair of multiple-RBI games, including an effort against Miami on April 28 in which he went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests (varies with pitchers).
