Falcon infielder will compete at the Canada Cup International Championship
Bowling Green State University softball standout Aspen Searle has been named to the Canadian Women's Elite Team. The announcement was made by Softball Canada on Wednesday (June 28).
Official Release from Softball Canada
Searle was one of 36 players invited to the Canadian Women's National Team Selection Camp, which ran from June 22-27 in Mississauga, Ontario. From that pool of athletes, the coaching staff selected two teams – the Women's National Team and the Women's Elite Team.
Searle and the Women's Elite Team will compete at the Canada Cup International Softball Championship from July 11-17 in Surrey, B.C.
"I had such a good experience at the camp this year," said Searle. "The program overall has stepped it up in all aspects of the game and it was so interesting to learn from the point of views of so many different people. I felt like my knowledge of the game has increased even just in these last five days and I can't wait to learn from them in the time to come.
"The older girls were very helpful in this experience by guiding and answering questions some of us had. I love the relationships I have built and I cannot wait for the competition at the Canada Cup. This is just the start to my journey to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan."
Searle, a native of Brantford, Ontario (Bishop Tonnos), will be a fifth-year senior in the 2018 season. She started all 56 of BGSU's games at shortstop in 2017, and was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year after batting .324. She led the Falcons in hits (58), doubles (14) and total bases (87), and tied for the team's RBI lead (35). Searle ranked second on the club in batting average, at-bats (179), runs scored (25), homers (five) and slugging percentage (.486). She had 16 multiple-hit games and eight multi-RBI contests, leading the Falcons in both categories.
With one year remaining in her BG career, Searle already ranks sixth in school history in career homers, RBI, batting average and slugging pct., and she is also ranked among the top-10 in hits, doubles, runs and total bases. Searle was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in both 2015 and 2017 (she was injured in 2016 and did not play in enough games to qualify), and also has been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society.
