BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University gymnast Lauren Feely has been named as a first-team member of the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American Women's At-Large team, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday. Feely represents BGSU on the Academic All-American team for the second consecutive year. She was a third-team honoree in 2016.
Â
Feely earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-American ballot by virtue of being named to the Academic All-District at-large team last month. The Academic All-District teams are comprised of eight geographic districts which encompass the United States and Canada. Ohio is part of District 5. At-large women's Academic All-District and All-American teams include student-athletes from beach volleyball, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
Â
Last month, Feely graduated from BGSU with a degree in inclusive early childhood education and carried a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Those distinctions cap an amazing four-year gymnastics career with the Falcons.
Â
On the mat, Feely was a two-time MAC Champion and the 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year. In 2017, she earned second-team All-MAC honors and a spot on the MAC All-Tournament team for the third time in four years. She tied for second on vault at the 2017 MAC Championships with a 9.850 and was one of two BGSU representatives in Champaign, Ill. at the NCAA Regionals. She tied for seventh among 41 gymnasts at regionals with a 9.800 on vault. Despite battling an injury, Feely excelled throughout the 2017 season with three outright victories, a total of four first-place finishes, and five second-place finishes. Her 9.870 Regional Qualifying Score on vault tied for best in the MAC.
Â
In the classroom, Feely was named to the Academic All-MAC team and earned MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete honors for the third consecutive year. At the annual Ziggy Awards, which honor accomplishments by BGSU student-athletes, Feely was named the women's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Â
Feely is one of 15 student-athletes named first-team Academic All-American from the at-large sports. She is one of only four gymnasts among that group of 15, joining Mackenzie Brannan and Keely McNeer from Alabama and Alex McMurtry from Florida. She is the only student-athlete from the MAC among the 15 first-teamers.
Â
Feely becomes the fourth Falcon to be named first-team Academic All-American during the 2016-17 academic year. That number sets a new BGSU record for a single academic year. Feely joins Pat Flynn and Joe Sullivan (men's soccer) and Joe Davidson (football) as 2016-17 Academic All-Americans.
