BGSU earns a top-25 ranking for the ninth time in the last 11 years
Once again, the Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes have been recognized for their success in the classroom. The Falcons were named to the 2016-17 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, which was announced Wednesday (July 19) by the WBCA office.
Official WBCA Release
The Falcons are ranked seventh in the entire nation on the NCAA Division I list. BGSU has been named to the WBCA's Academic Top 25 in each of the last four seasons and nine times in the last 11 years. The other 11 MAC schools have combined to earn the honor just four times in that same 11-year span.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and II; NAIA and junior/community college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined grade-point averages inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2016-17 season is the 22nd in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
The Falcons had a team GPA of 3.625 for the '16-17 campaign. A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPA's are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
"The WBCA family is committed to the student-athlete experience and celebrates these teams that have demonstrated excellence in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "This year's WBCA Academic Top 25 is a powerful list of teams and their head coaches who have winning cultures that prepare their student-athletes for success in life."
Wednesday's announcement, as mentioned, marks the ninth time in the last 11 years that the Falcons are in the top 25. BG was ranked 23rd on the 2006-07 list, and the Falcons were fifth in the entire nation in 2008-09.  BGSU was ranked sixth in '09-10, 11th in '10-11, 24th in 2011-12, 25th three seasons ago, fifth two years ago and 25th last season.
BGSU has made the list 10 times over the last 17 years. No other MAC institution has made the list more than twice in that time.
