MOREHEAD, Ky. – Rachel Winters scored her first goal since 2014 and the BGSU defense permitted just one shot on goal, as the Falcons defeated Morehead State 2-0 in Morehead, Ky. on Friday night. Winters' goal was the game-winner for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, which improved to 2-0-0 in 2017.
BGSU dominated play but could not find the net until ten minutes had elapsed in the second half, when Winters beat goalkeeper Michelle Washburn with a shot from outside the box. Erica Hubert padded the lead with six minutes remaining. Overall, they out-shot the Eagles 25-5, including 11-1 in shots on goal. The Falcons earned ten corner kicks and permitted none. The victory gives Bowling Green its third straight 2-0-0 start and its first triumph over the Eagles in four tries.
COACH SAYS…
Following the match, BGSU head coach Matt Fannon said, "Morehead gave us a lot of new and different problems to solve. Ultimately, we had the patience and quality to figure them out."
THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE
The Falcons consistently kept the ball in their offensive end throughout the match, leaving goalkeeper Victoria Cope with little to do. The Eagles managed only five shots, and only one of those reached Cope. She saved it, and she has now stopped three of four shots through 180 minutes. This was the tenth time in 407 all-time games that BGSU has allowed fewer than two shots on goal.
HUBERT MOVES UP
Redshirt junior midfielder Erica Hubert (Welland, Ontario, Canada) continues her trek up BGSU's all-time lists for points and goals. Her goal against Morehead State was the 16th of her career, which moves her into a tie with Britt Anderson for ninth in Falcon history. She needs two more to tie Michelle Lisy for eighth. The two points provided by tonight's goal give Hubert a career total of 34. She is now in sole possession of 11th place on that all-time list. She needs three points to tie Janice Mentrup for tenth.
WINTER(S) IS HERE!
Senior defender Rachel Winters (Plymouth, Mich.) scored her first career goal in her fifth career game, at Chicago State on Sept. 7, 2014. She had to wait nearly three years, but she finally earned her second career goal at Morehead State. The score was one of two shots on goal for Winters, and that is a career high. It was also the first game-winning goal of her career.
UP NEXT…
Bowling Green wastes no time in returning to action, as they face a road tilt against the Butler Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 27). The Bulldogs are 1-1-1 in 2017 and have scored and allowed just one goal in three games. Butler fought to a 0-0 draw with #18 Notre Dame in their season opener, lost at Ohio 1-0, then defeated Michigan State 1-0 on Thursday (Aug. 24). Goalkeeper Leonie Doege is 1-0-1 and has not allowed a goal in 200 minutes. Caitlyn Disarcina has scored the Bulldogs' lone 2017 goal.
BGSU is 0-3 all-time against Butler. The Falcons are seeking their first season-opening three game winning streak since 1998. A win would give BGSU three straight road wins to start a season for the first time ever and make Matt Fannon the first coach in Falcon history to win his first three games.
