BGSU To Host Mel Brodt Invitational Friday
August 29, 2017 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams kick off the 2017 season as they host the 30th Mel Brodt Invitational. The namesake of the event, Mel Brodt, spent 25 years as the head coach for BGSU's cross country teams and 20 at the helm of the track and field team. During his time with the Falcons, Brodt coached 53 All-Americans, 92 MAC Champions and an Olympic champion (Dave Wottle, 1972, 800m).
The Mel Brodt Invitational
The Falcons will host the University of Toledo at the 30th edition of the Mel Brodt Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1. The meet will begin with the men's 5,000m at 6:30 p.m., followed by the women's event of the same distance at 7:00 p.m. Both events will be held adjacent to Doyt Perry Stadium at Forrest Creason Golf Course.
Against the Rockets
The 2016 season saw two regular season meetings between the Rockets and Falcons. BGSU's cross country teams opened their season last year at the Toledo Invitational where they fell to the Rockets in a close meet. The Falcons then hosted the Rockets at the 2016 Mel Brodt Invitational a few weeks later where Rachel Walny of BGSU finished in the top spot for the women.
"Fresh" Squad for the Women
The Falcons enter the 2017 season with one of the youngest squads in the MAC. The women's team welcomes seven freshmen, including Allison Holahan who redshirted last season while competing unattached in two meets, both against Toledo. The team also sees the return of six members of the 2016 squad, including Rachel Walny, who was the top finisher for the Falcons in five meets last season.
Veteran Men's Team
The men's team sees eight returners for the 2017 season, including three seniors and five juniors. Five members of BGSU's men's team competed at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Invitational where Noah Schaub finished second overall in the 8K with a time of 25:57.5.
MAC Preseason Poll
The 2017 MAC Cross Country Preseason Poll was released Wednesday, Aug. 30, picking both Falcons squads to finish third overall. The projected third place finish for the men's team would be the highest finish since winning the MAC Championship in 1995. The women's squad looks to finish in the top three for the third year in a row.
