Women's Soccer Kicks Off With Two Exhibition Matches This Week
August 07, 2017 | Women's Soccer
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team continue preparations for the 2017 regular season by competing in a pair of exhibition matches this week. The Falcons begin their schedule by hosting the Xavier Musketeers at Cochrane Field on Tuesday, Aug. 8. Then, BGSU squares off against preseason no. 1 West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. on Saturday, Aug. 12. The matches are scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
New Bowling Green head coach Matt Fannon will make his unofficial coaching debut on Tuesday. Fannon arrived at BGSU following four years at Wittenberg University, where he compiled a 40-26-10 record. In 2016, Wittenberg finished 13-5-2 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament. The team's 7-1 record in North Coast Athletic Conference matches helped Fannon earn NCAC Coach of the Year honors.
"We have been working very hard to get ready for the season," said Fannon. "These games are great for continuing that preparation and finding out more about our strenghts and weaknesses against quality competition."
The Falcons return 10 of 11 starters from a 2016 team that finished 8-10-1 overall and 3-7-1 in Mid-American Conference games. Those players accounted for 21 of BGSU's 23 goals and 13 of the team's 19 assists in 2016. This includes Erica Hubert and Skylar Fleak, who scored seven and six times respectively. Also returning is goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve, who started 11 times and earned four shutouts. She allowed just 1.40 goals per game and saved 82.4 percent of shot attempts.
Xavier finished the 2016 season with a 7-11-1 record. The Musketeers return seven of 11 starters and begin the year with nine seniors. West Virginia was recently voted as the no. 1 team in the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Preseason poll. Nine starters are back for a Mountaineers team that went 23-2-2 and lost 3-1 in the national championship game to USC. BGSU owns records of 2-1 against Xavier and 0-4 against West Virginia in regular season play.
Bowling Green's regular season begins on Friday, Aug. 18 when they travel to Rochester, Mich. for a match against Oakland University.
