BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team pierced the goal three times in the first half during an impressive 4-1 triumph over Miami on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24). The Falcons' first Mid-American Conference victory of 2017 was held in front of 353 fans at Cochrane Stadium. Skylar Fleak led the way with five points, while Maureen Kennedy posted two assists and tied a BGSU record.
The Falcons quickly took the advantage. In the third minute, goalkeeper Victoria Cope sent a long pass to Maureen Kennedy, who dribbled past midfield and then sent a pass over the top to Fleak. Fleak went into the box for a one-on-one and beat Miami keeper Patricia Koutoulas for a 1-0 lead just 2:34 into the match. It was the foruth-fastest goal in BGSU history.Â
Miami evened the game in the 18th minute, but BGSU allowed the game to remain tied for only a few minutes. In the 20th minute, Fleak scored her second goal of the match off a set piece. Kennedy took a corner kick and found Fleak, who headed the ball past Koutoulas for the game-winner.
Bowling Green earned their final two goals in a 76-second span across the end of the first and beginning of the second halves. On the first, Kristin Tveit played Marissa Swindell behind the back line. Swindell slotted a shot through the lower corner in a one-on-one against Koutoulas for the 3-1 lead with just 54 seconds left in the opening half. The Falcons closed the scoring just 22 seconds into the second half. Fleak took a shot that Koutoulas deflected, but Barnes was there to clean it up for a 4-1 lead that held for the remainder of the contest.
NOTE OF THE DAY
Maureen Kennedy is now enshrined in the BGSU record book. Her assist on the opening goal increased her streak of consecutive matches with an assist to five. That ties the BGSU record set by Julie Trundle in 2002. It also gave her a streak of six consecutive games with at least one point, and that is just one game shy of tying the school record. Kennedy, just a sophomore, already has a goal and seven assists this season (nine points); in 28 career games, she is already up to five goals and 11 assists. She needs just three assists to tie the school record for a single season and two to move into the top ten in BGSUÂ history for career assists.
SKY-HIGH
With two goals and an assist against Miami, Fleak added five more points to her season total. Fleak now has 20, more than halfway to the BGSU single-season record of 38. She has eight goals and four assists in 2017 and increases her career totals to 24 goals, nine assists and 57 points. Fleak is now tied with Julie Trundle for the fourth-most career points in BGSU history, and she is only four goals from a tie for second place for career goals. In 2017, she has at least one point in six of nine matches, at least one goal in four of nine, and twi multi-goal games.
