Tennis Claims Four Titles at WSU Invitational

DAYTON, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program claimed four titles at the Wright State Invitational this weekend, including three singles and one doubles title. The team tallied a total of 20 wins over the course of the two-day tournament and earned titles in the Singles One, Two and Three flights, as well as the championship in the Doubles One flight.

WSU Invitational Highlights

For the second consecutive tournament this season, junior Paula Comella claimed the Flight One Singles title when she defeated Valeriia Lavrenchuk (IUPUI) by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Ayumi Sasaki took the Flight Two Singles title by a first set score of 6-4 and retiring Jade Kawamoto (Dayton). Sasaki went undefeated in both singles and doubles competition over the course of the tournament, while it is her first title of the fall season.
Sasaki earned another title victory when she paired up with Polina Radeva in Flight One Doubles. The combo advanced to the finals after a 6-3 win over Nsimba / Tuefl (YSU), and faced off against teammates Paula Comella / Marta Bettinelli in the championship, which resulted in a 6-1 win.
Also in the Flight Two Singles competition, sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash defeated Luisa Pelayo (Wright State) in the opening set by a score of 6-0, and battled back in the tie-breaker by a score of 10-3 to claim the consolation final.
Freshman Marta Bettinelli earned her first career title when she claimed Flight Three Singles championship with a 3-0 win over teammate Vanesa Pardo.

Up Next

The Bowling Green tennis program will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete in the Buffalo Invitational from Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 8.
The Buffalo Invitational will be the third of four invites in which the Falcons will participate in of the 2017 fall campaign, leading up to the ITA Regionals from Oct. 12-17.
