• The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, looking to extend a school-record nine-match win streak, hits the road for a pair of Mid-American Conference matchups this week. Head coach Matt Fannon and the first-place Falcons travel to Northeast Ohio for a Thursday night (Oct. 18) meeting with the University of Akron. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field on the UA campus.
• Then, the Brown and Orange will wrap up the road portion of the regular-season schedule vs. the University at Buffalo on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 21). The Falcons and Bulls will meet in a 12:00 p.m. contest at UB Stadium.
THE FALCONS AND THE MAC RACE
• With the Falcons' win over then second-place Ohio on Sunday, BGSU has moved ever closer to clinching the 2018 MAC regular-season championship. BG needs just one result – either a win or a tie – over the last three games to clinch the outright title.
• With a perfect 8-0-0 record, the Falcons have 24 points in league play (teams earn three points for a win and one for a tie). BG is eight points ahead of second-place Ball State and nine points in front of third-place Western Michigan.
• Only the Cardinals have a chance to pass the Falcons in the standings, and that would require three BSU wins and three BGSU losses. Similarly, WMU could tie the Falcons at the top with three wins and three BGSU losses.
• The Falcons defeated both the Cardinals and Broncos in this season's head-to-head meetings.
GREAT START!
• The Falcons are off to a 8-0-0 start in MAC play for the first time in program history. BGSU has outscored the opponents, 20-3, in conference matches to date. BG's MAC start is by far the best in program history.
• Prior to this season, the only Falcon team to win as many as three-straight games to kick off the conference campaign was the 2000 club. Only five BGSU teams – the 1999, 2000, '06, '10 and this year's squad – have begun the MAC schedule with as many as two consecutive wins.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING! (BRING YOUR GREEN HAT)
• BGSU enters the week having won nine-straight games – a new school record – and the Falcons are unbeaten in the last 10 matches (9-0-1).
• Prior to 2018, the longest winning streak in program history was compiled by the 2005 team. That club, after beginning MAC play with a 1-2-0 record, won eight-straight matches to end the regular season, en route to a MAC regular-season title.
• The 10-match unbeaten streak is the second longest in program history. The school record is an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2) in '05, beginning with the aforementioned eight consecutive wins.
• During the nine-match winning streak, the Falcons have outscored the opponents, 26-3. In fact, two Falcons – junior Chelsee Washington (nine goals) and senior Erica Hubert (eight) – each have singlehandedly outscored the opposition in that time, while redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox has three goals during the streak to match the total of BGSU's foes.
A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons are 10-3-2 this season, and BGSU enters the Akron match with a perfect 8-0-0 record in conference play. As mentioned, the Falcons are off to by far the best MAC start in program history.
• BGSU has won nine-straight games dating to the final non-league match of the season, and the Falcons are unbeaten in the last 10 matches (9-0-1).
• After scoring the first goal of the match just once in the first five contests of the season, the Falcons have scored first in each of the last 10 matches. On the year, BGSU is 10-0-1 when scoring first, and the Falcons are 0-3-1 when the opponent scores first.
• The Falcons are 7-1-1 at home, 3-2 on the road and 0-0-1 in neutral-site matches this season to date. BGSU has outscored opponents, 31-9, including 20-3 in the eight conference contests.
• Senior Erica Hubert and junior Chelsee Washington have paced the BG attack. Both players have nine goals, and Hubert has seven assists and 25 points. She has a seven-match point-scoring streak, with 15 points in that time.
• Washington has six assists and 24 points on the season. Four of her goals have proven to be the game winner, and she was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Sept. 25.
• Junior Maureen Kennedy and redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox have 13 and 12 points, respectively. Cox is third on the team with five goals, including the GWG in back-to-back wins over Eastern Michigan and Kent State. Kennedy has seven assists to tie Hubert for the team lead, and scored the winner vs. Ohio. Kennedy is one-third of a veteran back line (along with seniors Morgan Abbitt and Alexis Fricke) that has helped BG to five shutouts in eight MAC matches.
• Junior Kathleen Duwve has started all 15 matches in goal this season, and has 59 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.61. She has posted five complete-match shutouts and combined on two other clean sheets.
• In MAC play, Duwve's GAA is 0.40. She has allowed just three goals in 675 minutes, and has a saves percentage of .906 in conference clashes this season.
• Head coach Matt Fannon and his staff – assistant coaches Cian McDonald, Dan Ball and Erin Kielmeyer – welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from last year's team. BGSU finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 13-7-1, and the Falcons placed second in the MAC's East Division.
• The Falcons are 14-4-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 16-5-1 in all games vs. conference foes since Fannon assumed the helm prior to the 2017 season.
LET'S GET IT STARTED
• During the Falcons' nine-match winning streak, junior Chelsee Washington has scored the first goal of the match on no fewer than six occasions. Five of those goals have come within the first 20 minutes of the game, and on four occasions, including Sunday (Oct. 14) vs. Ohio, she has given BGSU the lead less than eight minutes into the match.
A FEW MORE FASCINATING FALCON FUTBOL FACTSÂ
• Sunday's (Oct. 14) 3-1 win over Ohio was the Falcons' 23rd victory since Matt Fannon was named head coach prior to the 2017 season. BGSU has an overall record of 23-10-3 in that time.
• In the Fannon Era, BGSU is a perfect 22-0-0 when scoring at least two goals, and the Falcons are 1-10-3 when being held to fewer than two goals.
• BGSU, as mentioned, is now 8-0-0 in the MAC. The eight conference wins is the second-highest total in school history. The 2005 team posted a 9-2-0 league record en route to earning BG's lone MAC regular-season title to date.
• The Falcons have a record of 7-1-1 at home this season, and BGSU is 12-1-1 at Cochrane Stadium in the last 14 matches. In that time, the Falcons have outscored the opponents, 37-9, at Cochrane.
THE OPPONENTS
• Akron is 5-9-2 overall, and the Zip are 2-5-1 in MAC play. Every one of UA's eight MAC matches has been either a tie or a one-goal result. All five of the team's conference losses have been by a 1-0 score, with four of those losses coming in overtime. Most recently, however, the Zips picked up a 2-1 road win over Miami on Sunday. Akron is 1-4-1 at home and 4-5-1 on the road this season. Sydney Worthy and Carly Pcholinsky each have four goals and 10 points to lead a balanced attack. In goal, Erin McKinney has started 14 of UA's 16 matches, and has 75 saves, a 1.32 GAA and one shutout. Last year, coach Noreen Herlihy's club went 2-13-4 overall and 1-7-3 in MAC play.
• Buffalo is 10-5-0 overall, and the Bulls are 4-4-0 in the MAC heading into Thursday night's home match vs. Toledo. UB split a pair of 1-0 matches on the road last weekend, beating Miami but falling to Ball State. The Bulls are 5-1 at home and 5-4 on the road this fall. Carissima Cutrona leads the team with eight goals and 24 points, but has missed the last four matches due to injury. Marcy Barberic has 17 points on five goals and seven assists, while Kaitlyn Walsh has six goals and 14 points. In goal, Emily Kelly has started all 15 matches, and has 65 saves, a 1.24 GAA and six shutouts. Last year, coach Shawn Burke's team went 7-9-3 overall and 5-4-2 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
• BGSU leads Akron, 11-5-1, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Falcons have captured the last four meetings. BG picked up a 2-0 win in last season's meeting at Cochrane Stadium, and the Falcons posted a 2-1 victory in the last visit to UA two seasons ago. BGSU is 6-2-1 at home and 5-3-0 on the road vs. the Zips through the years.
• The Falcons lead Buffalo, 14-8-1, in that series, and BG has won the last two matchups. BGSU posted a pair of come-from-behind victories over the Bulls at Cochrane in 2017, including a 3-2 win in the regular season and a 3-1 triumph in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round. In BG's last visit to Western New York, the Bulls downed the Falcons, 2-0, two years ago. BG is 10-4-0 at home, 3-4-1 on the road and 1-0-0 in neutral-site matchups with UB through the years.
DOWN THE ROAD...
• Following the UB match, the Falcons will return home to close the regular-season schedule. BGSU will face arch-rival Toledo on Thursday, Oct. 25. That contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. Admission to all home regular-season matches is free.
• The MAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal-round matches at campus sites on Sunday, Oct. 28. BGSU has clinched a home game in the quarterfinals, and will face an opponent to be determined that afternoon.
• The four quarterfinal-round winners will meet at the site of the highest-remaining seed for semifinal matches on Friday, Nov. 2. The MAC Tournament's championship match is set for Sunday, Nov. 4.
