Matt Fannon was named MAC Coach of the Year for the second time in as many seasons, while senior Erica Hubert was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Year and junior Maureen Kennedy took home MAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors. Hubert, Kennedy, senior Morgan Abbitt and juniors Chelsee Washington and Kathleen Duwve all were named to the all-conference first team.
Additionally, first-year Falcon Sarah Allen was named to the MAC's All-Freshman Team.
BGSU's total of five first-team selections shatters the program's previous records. The Falcons' previous best was three first-team members and four total all-league selections, and both of those records were set last season.
The Falcons have five All-MAC First-Team members in 2018, after having a total of 10 in the first 21 years of the program. BGSU has had eight All-MAC First-Team recipients in Fannon's two years at the helm, after having seven in the first two decades of women's soccer.
Hubert is the second player to win MAC Offensive P-O-Y honors in program history, and the second in as many years. Skylar Fleak captured that award last season. Kennedy is BG's first-ever Defensive P-O-Y award winner.
Fannon, as mentioned, earns the league coach-of-the-year honor for the second consecutive season. Prior to last year, BG's only MAC C-O-Y award winner was Andy Richards in 2005. Samantha Meister was named the MAC Player of the Year in that '05 season, as that Falcon team captured the regular-season and tournament crowns.
Hubert was named to the All-MAC First Team for the second-straight year, after earning All-MAC Second-Team honors in 2016. She joins Meister as the only two-time all-league first-team performer in school history.
Abbitt, Duwve, Kennedy and Washington all earn all-conference honors for the first time.
Fannon has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 13-4-2, and a MAC record of 10-1-0. BGSU won the league regular-season title for just the second time in program history, and the Falcons' total of 10 conference wins set a new school record. The Falcons are 26-11-3 overall, 16-5-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 19-6-1 in all games vs. conference foes since Fannon assumed the helm prior to the 2017 season.
Hubert leads the Falcons in scoring, with 12 goals and 33 points this season to date, and she has nine assists to tie for the team lead. In MAC matches only she led the entire league in goals (eight), assists (seven) and points (23), and she also paced the conference in shots (5.20 per game) and shots on goal (3.20 per game). She ranks second on the BGSU career lists with 39 goals and 92 points.
Kennedy is fourth on the team with 17 points, and is tied for the BG lead with nine assists. In league games, she was second in the conference in assists, trailing only Hubert, and also was ranked among the top-10 players in the league in points. Three of her four goals on the season proved to be game-winning goals. Kennedy was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week three times in the month of October alone.
Washington has 27 points this year, with nine goals and nine assists. She is second on the Falcons in goals, and is tied with Hubert and Kennedy for the team assists lead. In MAC games only, she was second in the league in points (19) and tied for second in goals (seven). Washington has scored a team-leading four game-winning goals, scoring those four GWG in a five-match span. She had the game-opening goal four times in MAC play, and all four of those goals came within the first eight minutes of the contest. Washington was named the United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week on Sept. 25.
Abbitt leads all Falcons in minutes played, having patrolled the field from her center-back spot in 1759 of this season's 1770-plus minutes. She has helped the Falcons to eight shutouts this season to date, including six clean sheets in 11 MAC regular-season matches. Abbitt has played in 75 career matches as a Falcon, starting 71.
Duwve has started all 19 matches in goal this season, and has 71 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.65. She leads the MAC in GAA, and is threatening the school record in that category. In MAC matches, Duwve's GAA was just 0.49, as she allowed only five goals in 927-plus minutes, and had a saves pct. of .878 in conference clashes. She has posted five complete-match shutouts and combined on three other clean sheets this season to date.
Allen has played in 16 of BGSU's 19 matches in her first season with the program. She has four points on a pair of goals, finding the back of the net against Northern Illinois and Toledo. The goal vs. the Rockets came in her first collegiate start, and tied the score midway through the second half as BG rallied for a 2-1 win in the final regular-season contest. Allen had 10 total shots in MAC play this season, putting eight of those 10 shots on frame.
The Falcons, after picking up a 2-1 win over Eastern Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament, will host the remainder of the league tourney this weekend. BGSU, the number-one seed, will host fourth-seeded Ohio on Friday (Nov. 2), in a 7:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Stadium. The winner of that match will advance to Sunday's MAC Tournament championship, which is set for Sunday (Nov. 4) at 1:00 p.m.
