BGSU finishes the fall with 5-0-1 record
The Bowling Green State University softball team capped off the fall portion of the schedule with a 3-1 win at Ohio State last weekend. Head coach Sarah Willis and the Falcons went 5-0-1 during the fall slate, outscoring the opponents by a 28-4 count.
In the Ohio State game, which was part of the 18th annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic, senior Meredith Miller picked up the complete-game win, while six different players had hits, including senior Kali Holcomb, who tripled, and junior Madi McCoy, who came through with a double. Both of those extra-base hits drove in BG teammates.
"The win over Ohio State was a great way to wrap up the fall schedule," said Willis. "Miller did an amazing job of keeping a strong OSU offense off balance. Our defense was strong through the entire seven innings as well. We made a number of nice plays in the field, including a great play by Sarah Gonzalez, who stole a hit from their All-American, Lilli Piper."
The Falcons' fall schedule included doubleheader sweeps of both Findlay and Hillsdale at Meserve Field, and the Brown and Orange battled Dayton to a 1-1 tie in Columbus before downing the Buckeyes later in the day.
In addition to Holcomb and McCoy, sophomore Payton Hamm came through with an RBI hit vs. OSU, while classmate Sammy Dees scored two of the Falcons' three runs.
"We got contributions from one through nine in the lineup, and did a great job putting pressure on Ohio State's defense," said Willis. "Holcomb, Hamm and McCoy all stepped up and got baserunners home in key situations."
The Falcons did not allow more than one run in any of the six games.
The fall season concluded with a pair of intrasquad games, on Sunday (Sept. 30). The spring 2019 schedule, which begins in February, will be announced in the coming weeks.
