BGSU Student-Athletes Graduating At Highest Rates In The MAC

The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program today and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU's 91 percent GSR rate was tied for the highest among all MAC schools (Miami and Toledo were also at 91 percent) and 13 of the 18 varsity intercollegiate athletics teams had a GSR that ranked among the top half of the league in their respective sport. Bowling Green also ranked among the top 20 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic departments in the country.

For the second consecutive year, ten of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR. That total has been rising since nine in 2016, seven in 2015, five in 2014 and four in 2013. Men's cross country, hockey, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, softball, swim/dive, tennis and volleyball all posted perfect scores.

"BGSU student-athletes continue to flourish in the academic arena," BGSU Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger said. "Reaching their highest academic potential and earning a BGSU degree places our student-athletes on a path for lifelong success. These GSR scores reflect the commitment of our students, as well as the coaches and staff who support them in their development. We are proud of their efforts and the balance between academics and athletics at BGSU."

Softball showed the largest one-year increase within the department, moving from 94 percent a year ago to a perfect 100 percent in 2018.
Thirteen of BGSU's 18 teams have a GSR that is equal to or ahead of the national graduation success rate for their sport. Men's cross country is 18 points better than the national 82 percent average, while hockey (12 percent) and women's basketball (10 percent) all rank at least 10 percentage points ahead of the national rate.

As evidenced by these statistics, BGSU's student-athletes have taken on the challenge of excelling both on the field and in the classroom. In fact, the two areas complement each other and provide a foundation for success across all areas of a student-athlete's experience.

"I came to Bowling Green hoping to combine athletics and academics at the highest level possible," BGSU swimmer Elodie Schreiber said. "Hard work and dedication helped me succeed as an athlete, but the quality of education I received at the same time from BGSU helped me succeed as a person."
"The accomplishments and challenges that I have conquered while at Bowling Green State University could not have been possible if not for the help that student-athlete services provided on a daily basis," BGSUÂ football player Dorian Hendrix said. "Graduating with my master's degree was something I always envisioned from my freshman year of college and obtaining that goal is something I can always thank student-athlete services for."

The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.

The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2008-09 through 2011-12 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
