Fourth-Quarter Run Lifts Mercer Past Falcons Sunday
November 25, 2018 | Women's Basketball
McMillen, Cecil combine for 43 points in final game of CCU Tourney
Mercer University broke open a close game with a fourth-quarter run, and the Bears went on to a 76-63 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Sunday afternoon (Nov. 25). The game, part of the Coastal Carolina Tournament, was held at the HTC Center.
All five starters scored in double digits for the Bears (3-3), who used a 16-point run to overcome an early fourth-quarter deficit. Mercer's Rachel Selph led all players with 23 points on the day.
For the Falcons (3-3), freshman Morgan McMillen scored 22 points and junior Andrea Cecil had 21. The duo combined to make seven of BGSU's eight three-point field goals on the day.
BGSU shot 39.6 percent from the field in the game, and as mentioned, hit eight shots from beyond the arc. The Falcons held the Bears to 37.9% shooting and just two three-pointers all game long. But, Mercer utilized relentless offensive rebounding and took advantage of BGSU turnovers to attempt a total of 66 shots from the field, compared to 48 for the Falcons.
Selph had seven rebounds to go along with her 23 points, while Amanda Thompson stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, nine rebounds, six assists, eight steals and a blocked shot for the Bears.
Mercer got 12 points from both Linnea Rosendal and Shannon Titus and 10 from Keke Calloway. Calloway had seven rebounds and six assists, while Rosendal dished out five assists and hit her team's only two three-pointers.
The game featured six ties and 10 lead changes, and neither team led by more than six points during the game's first 34 minutes.
Those Rosendal triples came on back-to-back possessions during Mercer's game-changing fourth-quarter run. The first came with just over six minutes to go, and the second came roughly 30 seconds later. Those buckets gave the Bears an eight-point lead, the largest of the game to that point.
Sophomore Angela Perry had nine points and freshman Kadie Hempfling six for the Falcons. Hempfling and McMillen had seven rebounds each, while Cecil had six boards.
QUOTING COACH FRALICK
"We were good in stretches today, but we need to get better, especially in the areas we can control. We need to be fully invested in the process of improving and continue to work hard every day."
FIRST-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• After Mercer's Shannon Titus opened the scoring with a run-out layup just over a minute into the game, junior Andrea Cecil took a pass from Sydney Lambert and hit a second-chance three-pointer, then drove the lane and got a layup to go for a 5-4 BG lead.
• Cecil would score the Falcons' first nine points of the day, getting fouled twice in under a minute, going to the stripe and knocking down all four free-throw tries. The last of those shots gave BG a 9-4 lead midway through the quarter.
• Keke Calloway scored inside after the day's first media timeout, but she then was called for two fouls just six seconds apart. Falcon freshman Morgan McMillen split a pair of free throws, then sank a layup after a nifty shot fake, giving the Falcons a 12-6 lead.
• But, the Bears scored four-straight points at the line, then Linnea Rosendal's driving layup tied the game at 12-all with just over one minute left in the quarter.
• Freshman Kadie Hempfling alertly spotted sophomore Angela Perry inside. Perry was fouled and knocked down both free throws. But, Amanda Thompson hit a layup in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Bears a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• McMillen had a productive start to the second period, to say the least. She was involved in the scoring of BG's first eight points, and also took a charge at the other end.
• McMillen knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the arc to open the second-quarter scoring, then drew an offensive foul on the Bears. McMillen then faked a three-point try, faked a drive and hit a step-back triple for a 20-16 BG lead.
• Then, McMillen found a cutting Hempfling, who blew past her defender on the baseline and hit a layup for a six-point advantage.
• Thompson, however, ended BG's 8-0 run with a jumper, and after a turnover, she fed Calloway for a transition layup.
• Rachel Selph knocked down a left-side jumper, then a turnaround one-hander. When Selph hit a foul-line jumper, the Bears had a 26-22 lead and the Falcons used a timeout.
• Calloway, however, knocked down a long two-point try to give her team a six-point lead. Senior Sydney Lambert snapped that run, pulling up for a three-pointer at the top of the arc, and after the Bears hit a bucket, Cecil made a nifty drive and hit a turnaround shot off glass.
• Mercer scored the final two points of the half to take a 32-27 lead at the break.
THIRD-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• Cecil opened the third-quarter scoring, converting a driving 'and-one' layup and making the free throw to cut BG's deficit to two points.
• Moments later, Perry lobbed the ball inside to Hempfling for an open layup.
• The Bears were answering at the other end, but with the Falcons trailing by a 36-32 score, BG went on a run. Hempfling spotted an open Cecil, and the junior hit a corner three. Then, Lambert laid the ball off to McMillen on the right side, and McMillen's triple gave BG a 38-36 lead.
• McMillen worked inside, grabbing her own miss and putting the ball back up and in, prompting a Mercer timeout.
• The Bears scored to stop the 8-0 run, but Cecil drove and kicked the ball to McMillen for another three-ball and a 43-38 lead.
• A quick 5-0 run tied the score for Mercer, as a Selph three-point play was followed by Thompson's pull-up jumper in the paint.
• Perry made a nice cut to the basket, took a Cecil pass and drew a foul. The sophomore knocked down both shots. Then, after Mercer tied the game once again, Perry lobbed the ball inside to Cecil for a layup, and McMillen was fouled grabbing a defensive rebound. The freshman's free throws gave the Falcons a 49-45 lead.
• In the last minute of the period, Perry hit a turnaround scoop shot, and the Falcons had a 51-50 lead after three quarters.
FOURTH-QUARTER HIGHLIGHTS
• McMillen's left-side three-ball just over a minute into the quarter gave the Falcons a 54-52 lead, and after the Bears tied it back up, Perry made a nice drive across the paint, then stopped, spun and hit an 'and-one' layup. The free throw gave BG a 57-54 advantage with 8:03 remaining.
• But, Selph then got hot, making several buckets, and Rosendal knocked down three-point attempts on back-to-back possessions. Suddenly, Mercer's lead was eight, at 65-57, with 5:43 to go.
• The lead grew to 13 on a pair of Selph free throws, before Hempfling scored inside to snap a 16-0 run. Cecil made a pair of charity tosses with 2:56 to go, cutting the BG deficit to single digits, but the Falcons could get no closer. The Bears went 6-for-6 at the line down the stretch to seal the victory.
STATISTICS
• The Falcons, as mentioned, shot 39.6 percent from the field to Mercer's 37.9%. BGSU was 8-of-24 (33.3%) from three-point range, while the Bears went just 2-for-10 (20.0%) from long distance. Both of Mercer's successful treys came on back-to-back fourth-quarter possessions.
• BGSU shot 94.4% from the free-throw line, going 17-for-18. Mercer hit 24 tosses in 29 attempts from the stripe (82.8%).
