Two Falcons Earn All-Region Honors At Great Lakes Regionals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University men and women's cross country programs fought through the elements once again to conclude their 2018 season, competing in the Great Lakes Regionals held in Terre Haute, Ind. In the end, the Falcons had two runners who earned All-Region honors and both teams registered top 15 finishes, improving from last season.
Women's 6k Event
The women's event kicked off the Great Lakes Regional competition, starting at 11:15 a.m. The 6k race had 305 individual competitors among the 34 teams in attendance. As a team, the Falcons secured a 15th place finish, improving from their finish in 17th last year.

Men's 10k Event
As for the men's team, they followed the women's event, starting at 12:15 p.m. The field was slightly smaller, having 267 individuals across 30 teams at the event. BGSU was able to once again improve their team finish (19th) from last year, coming in 10th this year. In addition, of the seven participating Falcons, six recorded new personal bests.

The men's team was able to accomplish their goals this week, while also building towards next season. "We accomplished our goal to be in the top ten as a team and having an all regional individual," said Assistant Coach Juan Carrillo. "The guys fought every step of the way and I'm proud of the progress. I appreciate their fight and I'm looking forward to continuing to build the program."
Awards and Honors
Rachel Walny was named to the All-Region team with her 23rd place finish. Of those to receive All-Region this year for women's, Walny is the only one to have earned it for the fourth straight year. Noah Schaub also received All-Region honors, the first of his career. This is the first time the Falcons have had two runners receive this honor under Coach Lou Snelling.

Women's 6k Event

- Rachel Walny led the Falcons, finishing 23rd with a time of 21:00.1. Her finish was high enough to earn All-Region for the fourth consecutive season. Walny was in the midst of a fast group, finishing a second behind 22nd, and only two seconds behind 21st.
- Sarah Hunsley was the next BGSU runner to complete the 6k, finishing in 21:58.1 for 65th place. Hunsley was able to hold off the runner behind her, crossing less than two seconds ahead of the 66th finisher.
- Freshman Katerina Shuble concluded with an 86th place finish in her first regionals competition. Shuble was the third Bowling Green participant to place, concluding with a time of 22:17.7.
- Megan Aalberts and Allie Zofkie also participated in their first collegiate regional events. Aalberts finished 151st with a time of 23:15.3 and Zofkie finished 190th with a time of 24:09.2.
- Jessi Lindstrom and Allison Holahan also competed for the Falcons. Â

As for the men's team, they followed the women's event, starting at 12:15 p.m. The field was slightly smaller, having 267 individuals across 30 teams at the event. - With a time of 31:39.7, Noah Schaub improved his personal best in the 10k by over 15 seconds on his way to a 24th place finish at the Great Lakes Regionals. With his finish, Schaub received All-Region honors for the event, crossing just 1.7 seconds ahead of the 26th place finisher.
- Tyler Phillips improved his time by just shy of a minute, completing the course in 32:16.7. His time set him up for a 56th place finish, coming in almost two seconds ahead of the 57th place finisher.
- The Falcons did have one runner improve their personal best by over a minute, Jonathan Voth. Coming in 68th place, Voth finished in 32:29.0, edging Andrew Schilling (69th) of Wisconsin by :00.2 and Jon Klaiber (70th) of Marquette by :00.5.
- Cesar Arellano (84th), Kyle Hibinger (86th), and Abel Nijakowski (143rd) all completed their first collegiate regional events.
- Jonathan Wenning also participated for the Falcons.
