Loeffler Completes Coaching Staff With Hirings Of VanGorder, Campenni

Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University football coach Scot Loeffler has completed his initial coaching staff. He has announced the hirings of Brian VanGorder and Julian Campenni to conclude the 10-person assistant coaching staff. VanGorder, who was most recently the defensive coordinator at Louisville, will serve as associate head coach working with the linebackers at BGSU. Campenni was a graduate assistant at Boston College and will be the defensive line coach.
Loeffler also announced the finalization of coaching duties for two other assistant coaches. Erik Campbell, who was previously announced as the wide receivers coach, will also be the passing game coordinator. Jacob Schoonover with be the special teams coach and will serve as a linebackers coach as well.

Combined, the 10 on-field assistant coaches and Loeffler boast 221 years of coaching experience (an average of 20.1 years each), including 161 years in college coaching, Of those 161 years, 74 were spent at "Power 5" institutions and 34 years come in the Mid-American Conference.
The entire coach staff includes Terry Malone (offensive coordinator/offensive line), Chris Hedden (running backs), Erik Campbell (wide receivers), Max Warner (quarterbacks) and Louie Addazio (tight ends) on the offensive side of the ball. Carl Pelini (defensive coordinator), VanGorder (associate head coach/linebackers), LaMarcus Hicks (secondary), Schoonover (special teams/linebackers) and Campenni (defensive line) will work on the defensive side of the ball. Kevin Tolbert joins the staff as the football strength and conditioning coach.
BRIAN VANGORDER, ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH/LINEBACKERS
Brian VanGorder has served as defensive coordinator at four Power 5 schools during his 38-year coaching career and has coached seven years in the NFL for two different franchises. He has been the head coach at both Georgia Southern (2006) and Wayne State (1992-94).
VanGorder, a Jackson, Mich. native, has been the defensive coordinator at Louisville (2018), Notre Dame (2014-16), Auburn (2012) and Georgia (2001-04). His Georgia teams went 42-10 in four years, placing in the top-10 in the final national rankings three times. The Bulldogs won an SEC title and three bowl games during his tenure, while VanGorder was named the 2003 Broyles Award winner, given to the top assistant coach in the country. Six defensive players were selected within the first two rounds of the NFL Draft in his time at Georgia.
As defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2007-11, he helped the franchise to three playoff appearances. The Jackson, Mich. native transformed Atlanta's defense into a unit that finished 11th in the NFL in scoring defense in 2008. By 2010, the defense had climbed to fifth in the NFL in scoring defense.
He helped Notre Dame to a pair of bowl games from 2014-16, including a win over LSU in the 2014 Music City Bowl. Prior to his time at Notre Dame, VanGorder served as linebackers coach with the New York Jets in 2013. He coached the linebackers for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2005 before becoming the head coach at Georgia Southern. He has also had coaching stints at Western Illinois (2000), Central Michigan (1998-99), Central Florida (1995-97), and Grand Valley State (1989-91).
Prior to entering the collegiate coaching ranks, VanGorder was a highly successful high school head coach in Florida, earning Coach of the Year honors seven times. His 1987 American Heritage School team was ranked No. 1 in the state of Florida.
VanGorder is a 1992 graduate of Wayne State with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He was a four-year letterman for the Tartars (1977-80), collecting 335 career tackles, and was inducted into the Wayne State Hall of Fame in 2013. He is married to the former Ruth Jones. His children are Molloy, Morgan, Mack, Montgomery, Malone and Freddie.

Julian Campenni comes to Bowling Green after serving two seasons as a graduate assistant at Boston College. A 2015 Connecticut graduate, Campenni was a second team All-American Athletic Conference performer as a senior. He played in 47 career games, starting 38 times at UConn.
At Boston College, Campenni assisted with the offensive line, a unit that ranked 11th in the country in sacks allowed, 24th in rushing yards and first in fewest penalties. Prior to that time, he spent a season as the defensive line coach at Wyoming Area High School in Exeter, Pa., winning a conference championship.
Following his collegiate playing career in 2015, Campenni was invited to the Indianapolis Colts rookie minicamp.
