December 13, 2018 | Softball
Bowling Green State University softball coach Sarah Willis has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Sophie Bosket (Brownsburg, Ind.), Madison Lenig (Zionsville, Ind.), Greta L'Esperance (Byron, Mich.), Sydney Stepp (Westerville, Ohio) and Sophie Weber (Springboro, Ohio) will join the Falcons for the 2019-20 academic year.
Bosket is in her senior year at Brownsburg, H.S. She has earned a pair of varsity letters for the Bulldogs, and hit .446 during her junior season. She has earned her team's Mental Attitude Award. In the classroom, she has been an AP Scholar, is a National Honor Society member and has earned academic excellence honors. Bosket is ranked in the top 25 of her high-school class. She has played travel ball for the Indiana Prospects.
"Sophie is a highly motivated player that has an intensity and determination about her," said Willis. "Her competitive nature and fearlessness on the field will push our returning players. Sophie is a versatile player that will make contributions in the outfield and in the lineup."
Lenig is a senior at Zionsville H.S., where she was coached by former BGSU softball coach Leigh Ross Dakich. Lenig has earned varsity letters in each of the last two seasons after suffering an injury as a freshman. A captain on this year's team, she enters her senior campaign with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in her high-school career to date. Lenig, a catcher, received the Integrity, Character and Respect Award from the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA). She has played travel ball for the Indiana Shockwaves.
"Madison is a student of the game and has the ability to pick things up quickly," said Willis. "She does a phenomenal job working with pitchers and shows great leadership qualities on and off the field. Madison will certainly help to continue the growth of our program."
L'Esperance is in her senior year at Byron H.S., where she was an All-State First-Team selection last year after earning honorable mention in the previous season. A three-time all-region team member, she has batted over .500 in each of her first three seasons, helping the team to conference titles in all three years. L'Esperance, who also plays basketball and golf at Byron, is a two-time state qualifier in the latter sport. On the diamond, she has played travel ball for the Millington Cardinals.
"Greta is a natural athlete when it comes to playing the game of softball," said Willis. She has the ability to make an impact in the infield and the outfield. Â I am excited to see how her depth and versatility as player will enhance our level of play."
Stepp is a senior at Westerville Central H.S. A three-year letterwinner entering her senior campaign, she has earned All-Ohio Capital Conference honors in each of those three years, including a pair of first-team accolades. A pitcher for the Warhawks, Stepp has had an earned-run average of 1.30 or lower in each of her first three years. She has been named a scholar-athlete in every year of her high-school career. Stepp has played travel ball for the Beverly Bandits
"We are excited to add Sydney to the pitching staff at Bowling Green," said Willis, "She is incredibly deceptive with her pitches and does a phenomenal job of keeping hitters off balance. Â She competes at the highest level of travel ball and will be well prepared to make major contributions in the 2020 season."
Weber is a senior at Springboro H.S. and is in her fourth year as a team captain for the Panthers. She hit .446 in her junior season after batting .443 the previous spring, and enters her senior campaign with 125 career hits and 78 RBI in 80 career games. An All-Greater Western Ohio Conference selection, she has been named her team's MVP twice to date, and has been named a scholar-athlete in each of her first three seasons. She has played travel ball for the Ohio Hawks.
"Sophie plays the game with passion and tenacity," said Willis. She is fun to watch on the field and will add a great deal of power to our offense. Sophie makes for an exciting addition the the Falcon softball family, and has the ability to make an impact immediately in our program."
Willis and the Falcons begin the 2019 season on Feb. 15 at the USC Upstate Tournament, and the home opener is scheduled for March 29 against Toledo. Willis and her staff have seven seniors on the 2019 roster.
