February 20, 2018 | Gymnastics
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Bowling Green State University sophomore gymnast Jovannah East has been named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 20). East competed in all four events for the first time in her BGSU career last Sunday during a dual meet at New Hampshire. She used the opportunity to post the fourth-best all-around score in program and continued to elevate her place in conference, regional, and national rankings. With her help, the Falcons tied their second-best team mark of the season with a 195.025 and improved their Regional Qualifying Score (RQS0 to 194.735.
East was a late-week addition to the uneven bars lineup by head coach Kerrie Turner, and as usual, East rose to the occasion. In her first career attempt on the bars, she scored a team-best 9.825 and placed third overall. Her strong showing pushed BGSU's lineup to its best bars score of the season (48.825). In the second rotation, she earned second place on the vault with a 9.800; it was her 18th straight meet with at least a 9.8 in that event. East began the second half of the meet with a victory in the floor exercise, where she tallied a season-best 9.900 and fell just shy of her career record (9.925). She completed the meet by tying her personal record 9.875 on the balance beam. She equaled the score she earned last season against UNH, and this was BGSU's best beam routine thus far in 2018. In total, East accumulated a 39.400, the best all-around score of the week in the MAC and the fourth-best ever at BGSU.
Although RQS rankings will not begin until next Monday, East should rank highly for both the floor exercise and vault. She currently owns an unofficial RQS of 9.855 in both and adds a 9.710 on the beam. In terms of season average, East is also highly ranked. She is second in the MAC on the vault (9.857) and floor (9.854), fourth on bars (9.825) and first in the all-around (39.400). She is in the top ten of the Central Region in the vault and all-around, tied for 12th on the floor, and 16th on the beam. Nationally, East is in the top 60 (top 10 percent) in three individual events and is ranked 14th in the all-around.
BGSUÂ will compete in two meets this weekend within a span of 48 hours. First, on Friday (Feb. 23), the Falcons head to the podium at the Seagate Centre in Toledo, Ohio. There, they will face #6 Michigan, #12 Denver, and Utah State in Elevate The Stage. Following that, Bowling Green hosts a tri-meet on Sunday (Feb. 25) at Anderson Arena. The opponents for the Falcons' annual pink meet are #26 Ohio State and #24 Central Michigan. The Chippewas are currently the top-ranked school in the MAC.
