Wiggins, Gustafson Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
February 05, 2018 | General, Men's Basketball, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Tyler Spezia and track and field student-athlete Elizabeth Iversen.
Male Athlete of the Week
Demajeo Wiggins, a junior from Toledo, Ohio, was the only MAC East player in the conference that averaged a double-double over a 2-0 week, averaging 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds as the Falcons earned home wins over Ohio (Jan. 30) and Kent State (Feb. 3). Wiggins also shot a robust 58.3 percent from the field. The Toledo native tied a season high with eight made field goals (8-for-15) while posting 18 points and 11 rebounds versus Ohio. He then registered 13 points (6-for-9) and nine rebounds in a victory over Kent State.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt senior from Iowa City, Iowa, climbed four spots to No. 4 in the country in the shot put Saturday by breaking her own school record in the event. Her throw of 57-feet-2 is more than 15 inches further than the previous school record and she leads the MAC in the event by almost six feet. Of Gustafson's six throws Saturday, four of them traveled further than 55 feet. Only a dozen shot putters in the country have thrown that far even once all year.
