Falcon Divers Compete at NCAA Diving Zone C Championships This Week
March 07, 2018 | Women's Swimming & Diving
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – A trio of Bowling Green State University divers will represent the Falcons this week in Columbus, Ohio at the 2018 NCAA Diving Zone C Championships. This regional event includes competitions in the one-meter, three-meter, and platform diving events. It begins on Thursday, March 8 and lasts through Saturday, March 10; events begin at 1:00 p.m. on each day at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University. Sophomore Talisa Lemke and juniors Claire Stam and Ashley White will compete in the one-meter and three-meter events.
Lemke and Stam are both veterans of the Diving Zones, while White is a newcomer to the event. Lemke advanced to the meet last season as a freshman and reached the finals in both event. As a sophomore, she has taken the next step, setting new school records on a near-weekly basis and winning a Mid-American Conference championship in the one-meter. Stam heads to the regional for the third time in her three seasons at BGSU. She qualified this season at the 2017 Zippy Invitational, where she finished second out of 27 divers with a 282.15 in the three-meter. Two weeks ago at the MAC Championships, she placed sixth overall in the three-meter. White qualified for the first time earlier this season by taking second place out of 21 in the one-meter at the Buffalo Diving Invitational (265.95).
At this week's Zone C meet, there are 55 divers competing in the one-meter and 50 divers competing in the three-meter. All divers will perform six dives in the preliminary round. The divers with the 18 best composite scores in each event will advance to the finals, where they will complete six more dives. The scores from the final will be added to the preliminary round scores to produce final standings. Berths to the NCAA Championships are based on how each zone performed last season. For Zone C, the top eight divers in the one-meter and the top ten divers in the three-meter will advance. The NCAA Championships will take place from March 15-17 in Columbus, Ohio.
HEAD COACH MATT ENSE SAYS…
"Our diving program has made great strides over the past three years as we scored 0 points at the MACs in 2016 and now in 2018 we scored 51 points on the boards there and have 3 divers representing the Falcons at the NCAA Zone Championships. Coach Grant has Claire, Ashley and Talisa ready to perform at their best at the biggest meet of the year. If they do what they have been doing in workouts they should be able to do some special things this week in Columbus. It would be really special to see each girl make it back and get to redo their 6 dives in the finals."
DIVING COACH TRICIA GRANT SAYS…
"I could not be more proud of these young women. They have worked so hard all season and have truly embraced my coaching style and having me as their coach, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be at this competition with them. If they can stay mentally strong, stay focused, stay loose, and have fun they should be able to do something special and have their best scores and finishes here."
