Lemke Qualifies for NCAA Championships on Stellar Day for BGSU Diving
March 08, 2018 | Women's Swimming & Diving
MEET RESULTS
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving team is finally returning to the national stage. Talisa Lemke became the Falcons' first national qualifier since Cheryl Patteson in 1996 when she finished fifth in the one-meter diving competition at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships on Thursday (March 8). The meet is hosted by Ohio State University and is being held at the McCorkle Aquatics Pavilion. Claire Stam and Ashley White joined Lemke on the boards for BGSU. This was Stam's third appearance at the regional meet, while White competed at this level for the first time.
Lemke said, "I am very excited. Going to NCAA Championships has been a goal of mine for a long time, and I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings on the three meter boards."
Lemke, Stam, and White began the first day of the meet as three of 53 divers in the preliminary round on the one-meter boards. Each diver was scored on six dives, and the top 18 advanced to the finals. Stam earned a 43.75 and a 42.00 on her first two dives and finished the round with a cumulative 239.75. That resulted in a 35th-place finish. White placed 38th overall after scoring 235.50, which is her fourth-best mark of the 2017-18 season. She received 40 or more points in three of her dives, including a 46.80 on her fourth attempt. Both Stam and White ended the round within 25 points of the finals cut line.
BGSU diving coach Tricia Grant said, "Claire had a very solid meet. She was able to be very consistent and hit all of her dives. Ashley placing in the top 40 in her first Zone meet is awesome!"
Lemke scored 40 or better on each of her six preliminary round dives and finished with a 269.50. Her 13th-place showing was good enough for a berth in the 18-diver finals, but she needed to move into the top eight to earn a spot at the national championship meet. Lemke was 8.15 points out of eighth place entering the finals. She began the final with a 49.20 and remained in 13th place. However, Lemke's next two efforts quickly moved her into the top eight. She earned a 51.25 and a 52.00 on those two dives, then maintained her place in the standings with a 49.45 and a 48.00 on her fourth and fifth dives. Lemke's final dive was her best of the meet, and the 57.20 she received emphatically sealed her spot at the NCAA Championships.
Grant added, "Congratulations to Talisa. She has worked so hard all season and truly deserves this!"
Head coach Matt Ense commented, "I could not be more proud of what the divers and Coach Grant have been able to accomplish this season. We have a strong day ahead tomorrow on 3 meter but to see the divers on deck enjoying the meet and performing at such a high level is special to see. They have been setting new standards at every meet and to see the success happen at the biggest meet is a testament to their preparation."
All three divers will compete again tomorrow (March 9) on the three-meter boards. Stam and White can join Lemke in Columbus next week by reaching the finals and placing in the top ten. Be sure to check out BGSUFalcons.com tomorrow evening for final results from the three-meter competition.
