Eight BGSU Gymnasts Named to 2018 Academic All-MAC Team
April 10, 2018 | Gymnastics
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Eight members of the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team have been named Academic All-MAC for the 2018 season. The announcement was made by the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday morning (April 10). The eight honorees represent a program record for BGSU since the current Academic All-MAC standards for gymnastics were put in place prior to the 2015 season. The Falcons placed five on the team in 2015, 2016, and 2017. This group is among 60 gymnasts named to the team from across the MAC. That total has increased each season, from 47 (2015), 51 (2016), and 57 (2017).
The recognized BGSU gymnasts are sophomores Lexi Augustine and Jovannah East, juniors Julia Beyer, Leslie Delgado, Lauren DeMeno, and Katie Morsefield, and seniors Shannon Goniwiecha and India McPeak. DeMeno and Goniwiecha were both recognized for the second time in their careers; the remainder were named Academic All-MAC for the first time.
Bowling Green gymnastics is led by head coach Kerrie Turner, who just completed her 11th season with the team. Under her guidance, the program has consistently achieved academic and athletic excellence. In addition to 23 placements on the last four Academic All-MAC teams, Falcon gymnastics' cumulative grade point average has ranked in the top 20 nationally in each of the last four seasons. Last summer, the team was honored for holding the 14th-best team GPA (3.6065) in the country, while 14 of the 20 members of the 2016-17 squad were named Scholastic All-America by the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). In the gym, the Falcons just completed arguably the best season in team history, as they scored 194 or better in every meet for the first time and set program records for team scoring average and team RQS, while East earned the team's second-ever berth at the national championships.
The Academic All-MAC program rewards excellence in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a 3.20 or greater GPA and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's contests during the season.
