April 13, 2018 | Gymnastics
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Department of Athletics invites all fans, students, and community members to help wish Jovannah East good luck and send her off to the 2018 NCAA Women's Gymnastics National Championships. The ceremony will take place beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18 at the Sebo Athletic Center, located on the north end of Doyt Perry Stadium. East will then depart for St. Louis, Mo., as she is set to become BGSU's first representative at the national championships since 1999. She will compete in the all-around competition and is schedule to perform during the first national semifinal, which will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20.
East qualified for the 2018 season's final meet by scoring a 39.250 in the all-around competition at an NCAA Regional, which was held on April 7 in Columbus, Ohio. In the individual events, she tied for eighth on the beam with a 9.850, then added a second 9.850 in the floor exercise. She also scored 9.825 on the vault and a 9.725 on the uneven bars. She joins Marny Oestreng as BGSU's only gymnasts to reach the national stage. Oestreng won the floor exercise at her NCAA Regional in 1999 to qualify, then won the national championship in that event.
A sophomore from Zion, Ill., East was named first-team All-MAC for the second consecutive year and won a MAC co-championship on vault (9.850) on March 24. She has scored 9.800 or better in 67 of her 81 career performances (.827) and has won 31 events during her two seasons. She owns the second-best score in BGSU history on beam and vault, as well as the third-best all-around total. This season, East scored at least 9.900 nine times; in one meet against Central Michigan and Ohio State, she reached that mark in three of her four events.
The NCAA Women's Gymnastics National Championships will take place at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis. The 12-team event is split into two six-team semifinals, both of which are held on April 20. East will compete in the first semifinal and rotate with Nebraska. Her semifinal will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2; the evening semifinal (8:00 p.m. ET) will air on ESPNU. Both will also stream live online via ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app (cable subscription required).
