Standout shortstop comes to BGSU after two stellar seasons at Illinois Central College
Bowling Green State University softball coach Sarah Willis has announced the addition of Madisyn McCoy to the program. McCoy, a shortstop, will join the Falcons in time for the 2018-19 academic year.
McCoy, a transfer from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are pleased to sign Madi to the Falcon program," said Willis. "Not only will she make our offense and our middle infield stronger, she also has the type of character coaches look for. Madi has a professional maturity that will strengthen the mindset of our program. She is truly a great kid, from a great family, and is a true talent."
McCoy, a native of Washington, Ill. (Washington H.S.), has helped ICC qualify for the 2018 NJCAA Division II National Championship (May 16-19). As of May 3, McCoy was hitting .445 with an on-base percentage of .500 and a slugging pct. of 1.034. She had 19 home runs and 59 runs batted in through 34 games, and also had totals of 10 doubles, three triples, 53 total hits and 47 runs scored. She also had a fielding percentage of .963.
McCoy was named an NJCAA Player of the Week on April 18, after hitting .518 with six homers and 17 RBI the prior week (April 9-15). She also was named to the All-Region Team for the second consecutive year. She was ranked No. 59 in the nation in the 2018 FloSoftball Hot 100 Rankings.
In 2017, she hit .455 as a freshman at ICC, with a .473 OBP and a slugging pct. of .869. McCoy had 18 homers and 60 RBI, with 80 hits and 58 runs scored in 50 games. She also had 18 doubles and a pair of triples as the Cougars finished fourth in the nation.
McCoy hit .525 as a senior at Washington H.S., with 18 homers and 65 RBI in that 2016 campaign. She also went 30-2 in the circle, with 256 strikeouts, a 1.26 ERA and no fewer than six no-hitters. McCoy set school single-season records for hits, homers, RBI, wins and strikeouts.
The Panthers went 37-2 that year, posting a Class 3A state runner-up finish, and McCoy was the Peoria Journal Star's Softball Player of the Year as well as the Greater Peoria Hall of Fame Female Athlete of the Year.
In her junior season, McCoy led the Panthers to the 2015 3A state championship. She hit .383 with 12 homers and 40 RBI that season, and went 23-4 with a 1.49 ERA and 210 strikeouts in the circle.
McCoy, a four-time team MVP at Washington, was an all-state first-team selection as both a junior and a senior, after earning second-team honors as a sophomore and third-team accolades in her freshman campaign.
She hit .449 in her high-school career, and set school career records for runs (141), hits (195), doubles (45), homers (42), RBI (161), innings pitched (513), wins (77), strikeouts (708) and shutouts (27).
McCoy's brother, Mason, played baseball at ICC for two years before playing his final two seasons at the University of Iowa. A team captain and all-region selection for the Hawkeyes in his senior year of 2017, he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Madi McCoy joins a Falcon team that finished the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 26-26, and BGSU was fourth in the MAC's East Division with a league mark of 8-14. Willis and her assistant coaches, Katie Reiff and Lauren Gambone, had three seniors on the '18 team, as the Falcons' 22-player roster includes 19 student-athletes with at least one more year of eligibility remaining.
