That lengthy list of honorees includes Lexi Augustine, Julia Beyer, Rachel Creagh, Whitney Cronin, Leslie Delgado, Lauren DejMeno, Shannon Goniwiecha, Taylor Livingston, Grace Logan, Samantha Marion, India McPeak, Laura Mitchell, Katie Morsefield and Taylor Worthington.
A total of 760 student-athletes across the nation met the required 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) to earn Scholastic All-America honors. The percentage of women's collegiate gymnasts honored this year was a record 55%. Last season, 47.83% of gymnasts earned the award. The previous high was set in 2015-16 with 49% of student-athletes earning a 3.5 or better GPA. GK Elite Sportswear, a WCGA sponsor, provides a certificate to each Scholastic All-America honoree and her coach.
"The emphasis the collegiate women's gymnastics programs have placed on academics is clearly highlighted by the success of our team and individual grade point averages," said BGSU head coach Kerrie Turner, who is also WCGA president. "The 760 collegiate gymnastics student-athletes earning WCGA Scholastic All-America recognition have worked diligently to find the successful balance between gymnastics and academics.
"The WCGA truly commends the student-athletes, the academic support personnel and the coaches within each program supporting and striving for academic excellence."
A record number of student-athletes – 118 (8.54%) - earned a 4.0 GPA this year. This number has steadily risen since 2008 with 101 (7.68%) reaching academic perfection last year and 97 (7.52%) in 2015-16.
BGSU's total of 14 honorees is tied for the 11th-highest total in the nation.
The WCGA is the advocate for women's collegiate gymnastics. Until this month, the coaches' association was known as the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.
The BGSU gymnastics team had arguably the finest season in school history in 2018. The Falcons scored 194 or better in every meet for the first time ever, and BG set program records for team scoring average and team RQS. The Falcons also set school meet records on the balance beam for lineup score and individual score. The Falcons tallied two of the nine best team scores in school history and were the only MAC team to defeat eventual MAC champion Central Michigan in the regular season. They also led the MAC in beam RQS and finished second on floor and third on vault.
"Academic success is at the very core of the BGSU gymnastics program," said Turner. "I am incredibly proud of our gymnasts that have achieved WCGA Scholastic All-America status. Their hard work and dedication has clearly benefited the academic success achieved. I also would like to thank the staff in Student-Athlete Services for their assistance and dedication to our student- athletes."
