After eight years of two six-team divisions, the MAC has eliminated divisions for the sport of women's soccer beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
Ball State was tabbed to place second in the 2018 preseason poll, with 119 points and one first-place vote. The Falcons were just five points behind, earning 114 points and receiving a pair of first-place votes.
Last fall, the Falcons were picked to finish sixth (i.e., last) in the MAC's East Division in the league preseason poll, but BG proceeded to finish second in the division before advancing all the way to the championship match of the 2017 MAC Tournament. Head coach Matt Fannon welcomes back 18 letterwinners, including seven starters, from that team.
The 2017 Falcons finished with an overall record of 13-7-1 and a MAC mark of 6-4-1. BGSU's total of 13 victories was the second-highest in school history, and the six conference wins represented the team's most since 2008.
BGSU was the most improved team in the MAC a year ago, and the Falcons tied for 28th in the country in that department.
Buffalo was picked to finish fourth in the MAC in 2018, according to the head coaches, followed by Central Michigan, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Western Michigan. Akron and Northern Illinois were picked to tie for 10th in the conference, while Miami rounds out the preseason poll.
BGSUÂ opens the regular season with two matches in Hawai'i this weekend. The Falcons will face Loyola Marymount on Friday (Aug. 17) and Hawai'i on Sunday (Aug. 19), with both matches part of the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff. BG begins the home portion of the regular-season slate on Saturday, Aug. 25, when Oakland comes to town for a 2:00 p.m. match.
