BGSU faces Oakland in Saturday's home opener
Raisa Strom-Okimoto broke a scoreless deadlock just over five minutes into overtime, giving the University of Hawai'i a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday (Aug. 19) in Honolulu. The match, part of the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff, was held at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
BGSU junior Kathleen Duwve made 10 saves for the Falcons, who drop to 0-1-1 on the young season.
QUOTING COACH FANNON
"We have to learn quickly that being the better team and creating the most key chances all amounts to nothing if we don't take care of the big moments. We feel like we should be leaving Hawai'i with two wins. But, that is not how the game works, and we need to get our winning habits back."
HUBERT NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
• Redshirt senior Erica Hubert was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff. Hubert had team-high totals of six shot attempts and three shots on goal in the two matches in Honolulu.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 4' | Duwve was tested with 3:43 gone, and the junior made the save on a shot by Mikaelah Johnson-Griggs. Duwve would make another save on Johnson-Griggs at the 11:25 mark, her third save in the early going.
• 14' | BG's first shot of the night came from Friday's goal-scorer. Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox, who found the back of the net in BGSU's season-opening 1-1 draw with Loyola Marymount, uncorked a shot with 13:05 elapsed, but it was saved by UH 'keeper Alexis Mata.
• 16' | Duwve made a total of eight saves during all of last season. On Sunday, she made four stops within the first 15:18 of the match, denying Strom-Okimoto for the fourth of those saves.
• 31' | Freshman Emilie Reese and junior Chelsee Washington put shots on frame within moments of one another, but both efforts were denied by Mata.
• 45' | Duwve made a great diving stop just before the end of the opening period, going to her left to keep a Claire Jo Diede shot from finding the net. The save was Duwve's sixth of the half.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 49' | Senior Erica Hubert fired a shot after a corner kick by junior Maureen Kennedy, but Hubert's try was blocked.
• 59' | The teams combined for 12 shots in the first half, but six in the opening 13-plus minutes of the second half. Washington's second shot of the second half was on frame, but Mata made the stop to keep the match scoreless.
• 76' | Senior Alexis Fricke got forward and fired a shot, but it went over the target.
• 89' | A shot by Hubert forced Mata to make a great save with just over one minute remaining in regulation.
OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS
• 95' | Duwve's 10th save of the night came against Kayla Ryan just over four minutes into overtime.
• 96' | Strom-Okimoto broke the scoreless deadlock at the 95:07 mark, giving the hosts the victory.
